It would appear that negotiations were going well, which presumably meant that Vicente was at least not dead set against coming back and massively wanted a return back to Spain. We are also told things have taken a turn for worse either player/agent wants more or a third party are now involved

Albion have now activated the clause which puts the player in exactly the same boat as say Gordon Greer. Vicente can either try and negotiate a better deal (and by activating the clause this gives the Albion a better negotiating hand than if he were a free agent), or if say Reading, Saints or Elche want to buy him then we will want a fee. Dependent on that fee and with Vicentes injury problems that may deter them than if he was to cost nothing.

All the cards are in Albions hand. At the end of the day, just like say Gordon Greer players sign contracts and if they dont like them they either negotiate a better one, run then down so that they are a free agent or get sold pretty damm quick. Unfortunately for Vicente he signed this contract when he was 30, so if he wanted to run it down he will be 32. So I can perhaps see why his Agent is trying to get the best deal.

Maybe this is all smoke and mirrors in negotions. Perhaps it would have been better if the Albion hadn't made this activation so public.

How long did it take Poyet to agree on his 4 year deal? Something like 3 mo tha. These things do take time, especially when one sides missus is having a baby in another country.

The rough and tumble of a business negotiation: that is all it is... the ONLY mistake was Gus saying he would not enforce the option (inexperience, not for the first time, and not a big issue)... the club are doing the right thing (nice one Tony, Paul, whoever :)), let's hope Vicente does too, and shows commitment to the Albion... I sometimes wonder if he is worth the hassle (and I know Tony was extremely frustrated with the situation when The Dagger wasn't playing), but then I see him play and know that he is! :)

Apart from living back in Spain I cant see the draw of Elche FC.

Looks like they play in front of one man and his dog.

I wouldn't have thought that was the deciding factor. His wife [supposedly] wants to live in the sun. I'm sure she's not happy here, I mean look out the window. If you were used to living in the spanish sun for years and then came over to this, on your own, without knowing anyone, would you be happy?

David Beckham stayed in LA because of his wife. Despite interest from English clubs. She [Vicente's wife] will want what's best for her family, and I'm sure Vicente wouldn't argue (at this stage of his career) where his pay cheque comes from, as long as it is coming and he provides for his family.

Probably a good point.

To be honest we don't know that. When did Gus say it, and did him saying it make Vicente feel better about playing here which helped him and us last season? What will be the fall out from all this, will Gus be telling Vicente he won't be made to stay, but given the investment it's only fair if another club contributes if they're going to get the benefit? We don't know anything really, so it's not possible to judge if Gus has done something silly.

I have not posted here before but have kept up with developments through the forum.

My take on it is that the club had to exercise the clause and did so. He may stay or he may not. We must lot let this distract us from the bigger picture. What is the bigger picture?

He signed for us, which is the important thing. Gus sold the club to him and he came. Since then we have signed kaz, Thomas k and Bruno. We are going places. It is not long ago I remember googling mark mccammon to see what he was like and doug loft too. The club has come so far and it is incredibly exciting. Remember we did okay without him last year. The thing to remember is where we were just a few years ago.

I started uni in 1997 and we had just avoided relegation on the last day. My best mate at uni was a Leeds fan And used to feel sorry for me. Since then we have won consecutive league titles and play off final but been relegated again. Then we appointed gus just before the Amex. Look where we are now. Last year we finished above Leeds. Who would have thought that ten years ago. We have a ground which is the envy of the league, we have a chairman who LOVES the club and a manager in gus who plays great football.

Sadly I have still not been to the Amex as my wife works weekends and I have three young (3,2,2) kids plus I live in Warwick. Hopefully this season I will get down to see the ground and my stone in the ground from c2004 when the club was skint (excuse the pun). That will be a time I really reflect on where we are now compared to where we were.

Yes Vicente may leave but don't lose perspective of where we now find ourselves compared to where we have come from. We could be hawking tickets on groupon.

i like the cut of your jib sir. excellent post. you are in for a TREAT when you finally get a chance to visit the Amex, the whole match day experience will blow you away.

Personally, I do not want someone at the club if he does not want to be there, so I hope he is happy to return.

if it makes you feel any better, i once had a short stint as manager of Elche, so i feel well qualified to say that we are a far superior outfit with a lot more potential. The only player i managed to convince to join my ill-fated revolution at Estadio Manuel Martinez Valero was a washed up 30yr old Ravel Morrison.
NB: this was on Football Manager.

i like the cut of your jib.

An excellent and underused phrase in the English language. People really must make more effort to slip this into conversation. I used it while conversing with a work colleague last week, the first time I'd uttered it in years...and let me tell you les, it felt darn good.

Getting more than a little fed up with whether he will or he won't.

The bottom line is he clearly isn't enthusiastic about playing for us but we are bending over backwards to get him. I know his quality and witnessed it when he was fit home and away last season. However I personally felt we were overly reliant on him and had played plenty of good football when he wasn't in the team.

I won't be upset if he doesn't come and would rather we build a proper team and not a team around an individual. If he does come then the pressure will be greater on Gus to see he, Vicente and the team deliver and not waffle on about budgets and quality here, there and everywhere.

Really? Think of the Uber-Binfest (what is the next level? Shitfest? Bollockfest? Clusterfuckfest?) on the back of the club's silence.

"Why haven't they said anything? This is a SHAMBLES..." etc.

I think "Vicentegate" would be far more appropriate than all these "fests".

I use it often. Never fails to raise a laugh or a smile. I also like to respond to people when they ask me how I am with "If I felt any better I'd have to go see a doctor!". That one usually just gets a besumed look and a response of "Riiiight"
