Probably the minute th phrase 'Golden Generation' was coined.

And also the minute it became 'oh so clever' to be un patriotic. Try telling one of those Serbians today that playing for your country doesn't matter.

That would be the mass murdering ethnically cleansing Serbians? Most of them are lucky not to have been charged with war crimes!

Probably on a par with the Palace 'team of the 1980's' as has been said previously in this thread once the phrase was coined perhaps the damage was done.

England will never have a top class international team unless the players in that team play regularly in European domestic competitions against the best players in the world, particularly in key positions like strikers and goalkeepers. It just so happens that at the moment, England have 0 goalkeepers and only 1 striker that does that.

There was possibly a golden generation of players but there has never been a golden generation team because England have always lacked in certain areas. I am not entirely sure how England are expected to do well when that situation persists.

The golden generation was Beckham in his prime, a fit Michael Owen, a younger Heskey, a younger Ferdinand and, if possible, a younger Rooney. Those who trot out for England these days are not that 'Golden Generation'

There was NO golden generation. I've been saying this for years, but people insist our team is full of the some of the greatest players to ever play for England.

Take a quick look at the 1990 team for example. Rooney is not as good as Lineker. None of our other strikers are as good as Beardsley. Gerrard and Lampard are nowhere near as good as Gazza etc.

We're an underachieving side at the mo and we should make at least the quarters, but the idea that we're something special is laughable.

That said, Im sure Spain and Brazil's players earn a fortune too and it doesn't seem to have done them much harm (losing to Switzerland notwithstanding).

Is that the same Beardsley that Mark Hately kept out of the England team for so long?

Rose tinted son, rose tinted.

so there are *none* of the top players of the world playing in the Premier League? and half that side last night play Champions Leauge every year, certainly as high or higher a proportion as any other international team.

They got overlauded & overpaid thats where it all went wrong

Absolutely. Even when we're shite you'll always here one of the arrogant players say something like "we know we're far better than that performance." Really, are we absolutely sure.

Even last night Defoe trotted out the usual rubbish. Exact quote is "at the end of the day, we're a great team."

That's the problem, they honestly believe that it will just click and we'll turn teams over, because they believe we're that good. Well, we're not. We are the Fulham of International football. If we all work hard, play well as a team, then on our day we can be a match for anyone. Anthing short of our best, and we are very average.

Well put.

All that glitters...

but how can it being "overpaid" be the issue? they get the same as other players at the tournament who are having good games, while others are having bad ones (French, Spanish so far). really this over paid pampered argument doesnt wash, theres somthing else.
