no, no, dont start that debate

Thats not what I meant!! The point was, you can't decide sovereignty based purely on the wishes of those that live there!

i understand that view but then the issue arises just to how far back the rightfull claim exists. in terms of european adventure (as our history conveniently defines itself) the islands are spanish de facto argentinian- no doubt. but really-so far on i just think they are best left alone. as for the oil exploration-the argentinians have every right to get annoyed. i would support the sharing of rights but not surrender of territory

Although it would seem fair to allow people to keep their current sovereignty if they so wish ?

Great, I am off to South America at the end of next week...just as the Argentinians start to stir it up again over the Falklands...could be an interesting trip!

Don't worry - just take an SAS team with you ( assuming you can find one that isn't in Afganistan ! )

not purely, but if you make a claim and the population back you, then its a done deal. the only other way is to deliberatly go against the wishes of the population. in you're earlier example, that would be like making Bradford a seperate country without their consent.

as to the question, go read wiki or other site on the history. i think the Brits had claimed it from exploration and later treaty, but contested with the Spainsh. the Argies had a settlement there in 18xx which was abandoned, then the Brits reestablised camp and carried on.

am I right in thinking then you endorse ethnic cleansing? That the wishes of the people add up to nothing?

Still its the view that built America, a bit imperialist maybe, but each to their own.

can we apply the same logic to the "British" Pakistanis?

The irish didnt seem to espouse that theory in 1916 did they? make your f***ing mind up mate, and while your at it why not take your snidey 'strange concept to the british' type remarks and '800 years of oppression' chip on your shoulder and f*** off to an irish football team site ?

But ... if there IS oil in them there waters, how the hell is it going to be extracted without the facilities of a major land terminal that is connected to the rest of the world?

Nobody can imagine, surely, that the village of Port Stanley is up to the job? Maybe, just maybe, it's time for some real international co-operation?

No , maybe, just maybe they could build one on the falklands ? Why would 'internatinal' co-peration be needed?

Without reading the entire thread, this and the war in 82 was nothing more than two countries claim to the Oil that allegedly surrounds the islands and nothing more.

Its a major shipping lane which is regularly used by the Navy using Ascension Island (half way) as a possible stop over and or refuel.

They just have to find it, fly the drillers down via Ascension Island (Asi as it's known) and make a start!

There is a lot of fields surrounding the island, they just can't find them :lolol:

They managed to create a major whaling facility on South Georgia in the previous century so building an oil facility in this day and age should be feasible.
