To compare the Mail to the Guardian is just silly - The Telegraph is the right's 'version' and like the Guardian, a good quality newspaper. It has it's lean to the right of course but is still a good read. The Mail, is full of vitriol against whichever disadvantaged section of society that they deem worthy of their bile on any particular day.

Quite.

For an informed debate, the Telegraph and the Guardian go head-to-head. I don't necessarily agree with the Telegraph's political stance, but I do appreciate its intention of having an intelligent debate. For a less informed debate - it's The Sun v The Mirror, with The Independent sitting nominally in the middle.

As far as national newspapers go, that's all we need. The Express and the Mail (and likewise the other small-circulation papers on the hard-left) serve no purpose other than to feed the inherent prejudices their readers lust for.

I have only just watched the snippet from Newsnight.

I expected to see something different, I felt that the newspaper guy stayed quite calm whilst Campbell ranted and tripped over some sentences, seemed a bit forced when he twice mentioned ''best of and worse of'' rehearsed buzz sentence.

Not sure if I care too much about the piece or the relevance of the Milibands fathers political position, but I didnt think Campbell was particularly good in this.

Some very good comments on this thread. I'm not the only one who feels the undercurrent of anti-semitism in the Mail's smear tactics and in it's general descriptions of the Millibands.

The thing that always amazes me is that I've yet to meet anyone who admits to buying it -- but a lot of people clearly do. Is it something they have delivered under a plain wrapper; is it like voting Tory (well clearly it is in a sense) in that people do it in the privacy of the voting booth, but are ashamed to admit it to their mates because of what it says about them?

Agree with the other posts though. They've completely lost the plot on this one. Even if Milliband's father had hated the UK (which as far as I can see he didn't) there's no case for using that as a stick to beat his son with. And as for Hunt equating Ralph Milliband's not being a supporter of the free market with not being pro-British, that kind of smacks of McCarthyism to me.

Like most people I haven't read the article in The Daily Mail. But Milliband's father was a dreadful man and if Ed is going to talk about the influence Ralph had on him it seems perfectly fair that it is pointed out just who and what Ralph was. Ofcourse Ed's desire to muzzle the freedom of the press would be in line with his father's totalitarian views.

He was 17 when he wrote it. And i'm not sure he's entirely wrong. We do seem have a bit of an obsession with the empire and our role in the governance of the world. And we still seem to have a lot of contempt for Europe

Politics aside. This paper has used a picture of Ed Millibands dads grave with a derogatory title.

The bottom line is the man is dead. It is very ill taste. EM fathers opinions of this country were made when he was a teenager and yet he must have loved this country enough for him to risk his life in war. His comments may even have been true.

Plus wasn't it the mail saying Nigel Farage shouldn't be judged on his past Double standards.

Anyway be careful what you say from now on... Don't slag the NHS off, nor the economy, housing, trains etc you may be classed as hating Britain.

really ? he arrived here in 1940 , are you really suggesting that he is referring to a newspapers attiude and poliical stance from 6 or 7 years before , whilst he was a 10 year old , really ?
