Who would have thought it possible without safe standing

How much of the north stand currently stands? That's probably why the north stand is fine even without safe standing

I don't see how this is possible. At a number of points the whole home support was singing it (you could see it by the clapping) so there would have been people singing it very close to you.
Exactly. When the singing spreads around the ground it's obviously audible. I even join in myself. The Albion-Albion chants were great. But when just the NS sings it's usually not loud at all from where I am, and if you're in the middle of the away fans I'm sure you hear nothing at all (which was the initial topic) as they tend to sing almost non-stop, and that's all they'll hear. I do often hear a sort of distant, low murmuring sound from the NS without knowing quite what's being said. I didn't hear the TB's blue and white army chant. But remember that a lot of people are shouting and cheering and chattering all around me so that shouldn't be surprising.

On a personal note, I had two young Japanese students sat next to me last night. They went to the same university in Japan. One now goes to uni in Brighton, the other goes to uni in Ireland and had flown in specially for the match. I've rarely seen two people so thrilled to be at football. Particularly to see Mitoma in the flesh, up close and personal, and his battle vs Kyle Walker who they knew was a very good player - and who was run ragged by their hero. So happy they were treated to a vintage Mitoma performance, almost capped by him narrowly failing to bundle one over the line in the second half. These are a good football tourists, bless 'em

:D ... didn't know that... explains his ludicrous assertion that "the home crowd support has been amazing all evening"... City fans singing "Is this The Emirates?" obviously couldn't be heard in the Press Box..
I thought they were singing "Is this the Etihad" ie seems like a home match. Which I thought a bit rich as I don't rate the atmosphere at the Etihad at all. Last time I was there I heard nothing from the City fans until near the end. But OK, might have been the Emirates. Maybe both.

Absolute f***ing limbs…

Up there with the best ever Amex noise - when MOR notched.

Brilliant
My son (9) had been complaining (the it was hurting his ears) for the entire second half. Then MO'R scored and we both lost our voices in the aftermath.

Get your hearing checked!

Seriously, did you say you are in 1901? I guess there are a number of areas in 1901 where sound doesn’t travel very well. Eg the middle tier of the WS is narrow. Also I doubt WSL and middle get to hear the WSU that appeared to be rocking last night.

I'm in EU, about halfway between the halfway line and the South.

Yeah but it doesn't happen very often; if it did there wouldn't be a thread started about it. A standing section which concentrated the NS hardcore would definitely make a "big" atmosphere happen more often...

There have been a few times when the away supporters have sung things like “is this a library” and “shall we sing a song for you” when I’ve wondered about their hearing or the stadium acoustics.
I’m south of half way in the lower East and think often it’s down to the weather, as sometimes the North seem quiet and sometimes not.
What is certain is that yesterday, the whole stadium rose to the occasion and I don’t recall hearing the City fans at all in the second half.
Worryingly, I don’t remember the TB blue and white army song, though! Perhaps I was just enjoying the noise rather than concentrating on what was being sung!
I’d like to hear “We are Brighton …. From the South” more though, please! It’s fantastic when sung with passion.

That’s the one thing I find odd with the acoustics. From East Lower, I don’t think I’ve ever picked up on singing specifically from West Upper. Do you sing only when joining in with the North or is it just that it sounds like it’s coming from somewhere else?

TB’s Blue and White Army I felt was the catalyst for lifting the atmosphere good effort

The banging of the walls (in lui of a drum) kept it going for longer and it was beneficial.

Never thought I’d come round to the idea, but maybe a drum would help.
Atmosphere 1st half was frankly embarrassing
simple song easy to pick up the words are always the best. yes some of the other more complicated songs are great but really nowhere near as able to engage the masses.

At away games, the home fans of some clubs are very quick and very loud at the first wiff of the visitors time wasting. This must put a bit of pressure on the visiting players even though I'm sure their professionalism may mute it out.

Its a bit like last night when the ref let's something go (against us) and we let out a noise to make sure he knew we disagreed with his decision.

Well, last night I heard us getting on city's back when they were in front and trying to slow it down.

Amex crowd 9.5 last night, bravo!!

Keep it up for every home game ...

I heard both, and assumed the etihad one was self deprecating humour about their shit atmosphere

Having sat in the north for a long time, I’d go as far as to say we regularly heard absolutely nothing from the West and East stands, but on occasion would hear the away fans in the south.

It had me seriously concerned when we moved to the West. At times, the away fans have been much louder than the North, which can sound completely mute, albeit I am to the south side.

I just don’t think the sound travels well in the stadium. But I imagine to the players, it can be a totally different story.
My season ticket is in WSU and there is a lot of joining-in when the NS gets its act together. We can hear the NSK under the police box better, but not-so-much the mob under the screen (if only the two could link-up). For cup games I usually buy a ticket in the NS and I am always surprised that you can't hear the WSU singing along; this is due to a combination of acoustics and the fact that the simultaneous singing gets nullified to ears in the NS.
