Eldest son tested positive the other week and we come out of isolation tomorrow. He is 20 and had a first jab a few weeks ago. His friendship group all had it at the same time. Interestingly one of his friends is vulnerable and so had been jabbed twice. His friend didn’t get it, my son was asymptomatic and the rest of the group had mild symptoms. They probably picked it up in a pub watching the Eng v Ukraine game. They fit the stereotype of young people mixing and the football being a vector but the virus having no affect on fit young people.
We are told the delta variant is highly transmissible but in a household of four including a couple of 50plus year olds who have been double jabbed no one else got it. We kept our distance a bit but watched the final together in the same room.

However, the 10 days isolation has made the 4 of us in our household miserable (hardly a 3rd world problem, granted) and our employers have missed 3 staff members for nearly 2 weeks.

In the meantime, 450 people will have died of cancer today, 18 will have committed suicide and yet there were 65 recorded covid deaths yesterday even though the rates are going through the roof. I also read that deaths from liver disease has risen by 21% since the pandemic and criminally, nearly 1m kids missed school last week because of the flawed bubbling system.

Vaccines are working and we need to get back to work/normality soon …. Monday, in fact!

Every adult in the UK has now been offered their first dose of the vaccine. A phenomenal national effort.

Please come forward for your jab if you haven’t already - it protects you and your loved ones. Clapping hands sign

Deaths are currently just one sixteenth of the level seen during similar infection rates in previous Covid waves, the latest figures show.

The most recent data show that, despite a rise in case numbers, the seven-day rolling daily death rate is just 40 compared to 654 on Dec 26 when the seven-day case rate was close to the current rate of 45,000 new infectious per day.

Death rates in England and Wales are currently 5.2 per cent below the five-year average, according to figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), with Covid now accounting for just 1.2 per cent of deaths.

Ha, just downloaded that to post. It's a wonderfully encouraging graphic. We sadly can't stop all fatality but we have come a long long way!

These anecdotes of real world effectiveness are ignored by the media.

My daughter is fully vaccinated as she is a trainee children’s nurse. She met friends at the pub a couple of Fridays ago and it transpires that most if not all tested positive for COVID shortly after. She tested almost daily whilst in isolation and tested negative each time.
The timings would indicate that many of those their were at their most contagious yet my daughter was fine.
Vaccines work and they work extremely well.

Happy freedom day one and all, the covidians will be seething !

Are you suggesting that people who are concerned about COVID don't want people to enjoy themselves ? If so you are a prize c*nt.

Most people I know who are concerned just want a continuation of a moderated return to people's lives e.g. wearing of masks in places like shops where shop assistants are and feel vulnerable and that people continue to take steps to protect other like frequent hand washing. Why throw away the good practices.
