Wife and I have both just come back from being vaccinated, all very well organised and a big thanks to all the volunteers giving up their weekends to help things run smoothly .

Brilliant news - means the target of 15m first doses for the most vulnerable groups by Mid Feb is becoming ever more realistic. With more vacc centres still due to open, starting to wonder what the peak weekly rate might be now 3m looks nailed on even with a bit of a weekend lull.

More superb posts on this thread. Best thread on NSC and gives all news outlets a run for their money. I was worried/wondering after the press conference yesterday that the SAfrican strain will not respond to the vaccine and we will be back to square one. But understand that is too simplistic. It should give protection but how much we don't know is probably closer to the mark. I so hope we are out of this lockdown soon. I shouldn't moan as no real worries unlike those who have jobs on the line or relatives who have died, but I just want a life again.

478,248 first doses yesterday, plus 1,821 second doses - another 70k up on Thursday’s total.

Positive cases 33,552 - another significant drop and the lowest for a long time (before Christmas I think). 7 day number down 23.5%.

A couple more weeks of solid vaccination figures, lowering cases and hopefully then the conversation can start to cautiously turn towards a plan about lowering restrictions.

Agreed...on past experience the worst figure (deaths) should start to fall and less pressure on NHS etc...so that conversation should at least be had....I’ll refrain from saying more as it’s a debate for the other place

More than 60 million of vaccine doses administered worldwide - and interesting to see that also countries like France seem to be picking up speed.

That’s incredible work, equating to a rate of over 3.3m a week. The target is to have vaccinated 15m people by mid-Feb, which I always felt was ambitious. If yesterday’s rate is maintained (let alone improved upon) the actual figure will be more like 16.5m.

Thats a colossal achievement.

Rate of hospitalisation decrease is speeding up.......from the official data website :

Healthcare

Some people with coronavirus have to go into hospital.

4,125 people with coronavirus went into hospital on 19 January 2021.

Between 13 January 2021 and 19 January 2021, 27,721 went into hospital with coronavirus. This shows a decrease of 6.1% compared to the previous 7 days.

This makes me think we’re surely gonna push some way past 500k a day at some point.

If they start prescribing Colchicine, I would seriously recommend that everyone starts hoarding bog roll.

I say this as a gout sufferer so am experienced in the side effects of this drug.

491,970 vaccinations (first dose) yesterday, yet another high.

Positive cases down again, 30,004 - rolling 7 day graph is showing a very steep drop now.

Also more reports from Israel that infections and hospitalisation have continued to rise in all other age groups EXCEPT the over 60’s, can’t be coincidence and surely must be the vaccine beginning to take effect?
