When can people with CF get the COVID-19 vaccine?
People with CF have been moved from priority group six to priority group four. This is good news, however it is important to realise that the groups won’t be totally sequential and it is likely that the difference in time between a person in the first group being offered the vaccine and a person in the later groups may only be a few weeks. There is still some uncertainty about timing because we do not yet know how quickly the vaccines will be manufactured and which other vaccines will receive regulatory approval and when.
I think the initial group 6 allocation was based on the low incidence of serious covid cases and those with CF.
The first argument against this was that people with CF were, on the whole, VERY adherent to the rules and familiar with the protocols to restrict infection. Plus there aren't many elderly people with CF (for very sad reasons).
The common sense argument (that I got briefly involved in) was if you've got low lung function then a disease that reduces your lung function presents a pretty ****ing serious threat.
If a healthy person's lung function was halved they would still have a higher lung function than I do on a really good day. I top out mid 40%, normally 38-42%. It dropped to low 20s on a couple of occasions and both times I nearly died.
I should add that I'm nearly 50 and somehow wasn't diagnosed until I was in my early 40s ... it was always assumed that I was sickly.

My best friend in school has CF, I used to go to his before school and almost every month he was on a nebuliser for hours. We were kids and he needed that. I'm shocked that it took you until your 40s to get diagnosed, that's surely almost unheard of?

it's very unusual to say the least, but as a kid my lovely mum used to have me breathing steaming vicks vapour every few days to try to keep my lungs clear and I used to do loads of exercise as it made me feel better. It wasn't picked up.
I was also physiologically odd in that I have/had oversized lungs...used to hold my own in cross country running and in my late teens, in a physiology practical at university, I measure 130% predicted lung function. When I had persistent lung problems they had to rotate the xray plate as my lungs were 'long'... if it hadn't have been for the CF I'd have probably been a half decent cyclist.

Prof JVT is doing a live Q&A now on BBC News Channel and Radio 5........for anyone wanting to hear the undoubtedly reassuring answers he’ll give.
Jeez that alone should put you to the front of the queue, nobody who's last experience of anything was that should be forced to suffer any longer!
I suspect the Government have realised JVT goes over very well with the public, as he's being utilised more and more in recent weeks.

LOL. Dr Jenny has been pretty good too.
He's great - reassuring, refreshingly informal at points, whilst still clearly very professional and competent.
I think even little things like the "JVT" moniker genuinely help as well, as silly as that might sound.

Agreed, and there's just a little bit of menace about him too.
He clearly wouldn't think twice about smashing the shit out of anyone who crosses him.
Professional, competent but also liable to kick the absolute living shit out of someone when provoked? I think these posts should go on the Chris Hughton thread.
