Definitely. As long as a high enough percentage of people are immune, due to either natural immunity or vaccination, to bring the R to <1 without having to do any sort of social distancing or other restrictive measures, that's all that matters. Thankfully the 8-10% of anti-vax mentalists isn't enough to affect this.

Very proud of the missus today - shes volunteered to work extra shifts through until January (and beyond) up at RSCH to help get the vaccine out to the public quicker, once the roll out starts.
I may not see much of her in the evenings or weekends in the lead up to Christmas, but if people are getting the initial jab quicker because of all the additional staff helping out, it'll be fantastic.

As long as R0 is kept low, the lower the percentage of the population needs to be vaccinated/have been infected to achieve herd immunity. Based on the table below, 70% will only be needed if it's allowed to reach an R of about 3

I can't begin to tell you how much this news has cheered me up.

I returned to work after 3 weeks off because of the virus on Monday and had a really shit day yesterday including getting totally out of breath just walking round the block in the cold air whilst waiting for my car tyre to be replaced and then suffering for the rest of the day. I'm a fit 38 year old, and it's really knocked me for six. The fact that my parents and grandmother and everyone else in a vulnerable group are now within touching distance of the vaccine is just amazing. I bloody love science.

I can only see it as a positive. My condition (cystic fibrosis) has always been with me. However, the extra confidence in getting out and about safer and sooner than I thought was likely is a source of deep joy.

Good news indeed. I suspect we’re waiting on approval for Oxford, and if that comes soon we can really get mass vaccination going quite rapidly.

My understanding is we’ll have lots of doses of that available quicker, and of course without the issue of cold chain storage it can be distributed and administered much more readily.

Without wanting to be too cheesy, I would say COVID-19 is now mortally wounded and it’s simply a matter of time.

Exactly how I'm thinking - government very cautious pending that approval, but I can see the tone changing to someone significantly more positive if (when hopefully) this happens. I believe they've already produced 10's of millions of doses in the expectation that it get approved.
