haha! Got me there. I'd say it's an undefinable quality a band has irrespective of talent, success or influence. I would argue that the Stones were always cooler than the Beatles, All Saints were cooler than the Spice Girls.

I'd certainly put Keef and Brian Jones on a cool list. In a bizarre way you could maybe argue that Charlie Watts was and is the coolest Stone.

Beatles and McCartney are/were far from cool, if you're using the term to mean hip, fashionable, laid back etc. Possibly Harrison was closest. Lennon went very uncool.

This is going to take some thinking ....

For me the answer is th Rolling Stones , late 60's early 70's. The caricature they have now become masks quite how anti-establishment they were at that time.

I think I have to agree with that. The man just don't give a damn, and that makes him cool.

Anyone who tries to be 'cool', or thinks they're 'cool', isn't. Immediate disqualification. That's why the Beatles weren't cool (in addition to the obvious aforementioned reasons like Octopus's Garden): they started to believe their own hype.

I'd like to nominate Arthur Lee and Love. I'd like to, but I can't, for all the reasons in the above paragraph.

Nick Cave? Possibly... But even he cares too much about his personal appearance sometimes.

Smiths, Stone Roses and Nick Cave / Bad Seeds are my nominations. Turi makes a pretty good case for the Specials, though.

Mellotron's Bowie is disqualified, as he declared the thread closed at Interpol.

The Sex Pistols for re defining the boundaries of music.
This is all about opinions, but for me there is no contest.

He was/ is still the definition of cool, songs that carried such swagger and a devil-may-care attitude that rock is all about...

Phil Lynott definitely in the frame. Willie Nelson and Steve Earle are cool in their own ways as well, and what about that rock national institution, Lemmy?

I'd gone off the mainstream bit, to simply ask you in what way would YOU say The Stones were cooler than The Beatles?

In Keef and Brian Jones they had two style icons for starters. Johnny Depp (hello, I said Johnny Depp) styled his Jack Sparrow character on Keef-this in itself probably wins the arguement. The Stones were outlaws, you could take the Beatles home to meet your patents. And you'd have more fun with Anita Pallenburg, Marianne Faithful and Bianca than Yoko and that frump that bakes cakes.

I've not even started on the music yet.

Add Macca's double thumbs up salute and the Frog chorus and you have no case for the Beatles being cool.

The question was COOLEST band, you are having a laugh if you are suggesting there was anything cool about these guys, imo like. The interview with Frank Bough alone would put paid to that, foul mouthed overgrown schoolkids maybe but cool: :nono:
