Define cool!

haha! Got me there. I'd say it's an undefinable quality a band has irrespective of talent, success or influence. I would argue that the Stones were always cooler than the Beatles, All Saints were cooler than the Spice Girls.

So, basically, cool is any band non-mainstream?

Eh? I said irrespective of success, not unsuccessful. Are the Rolling Stones or All Saints non-mainstream?

Don't know anything about All Saints. When they first came out, neither the Beatles nor the Stones were mainstream. Epstein, however, realised his boys would have to become mainstream if they were to become successful. The Stones took longer, but followed in The Beatles wake. It became the goodies v the baddies. You either liked The Beatles, or The Stones, rarely both! In what way would you say The Stones were cooler than The Beatles?

plus they made f***ing good music, and they all dressed like they didn't belong in bands- other than the smiths, which i find quite cool

I'll say once again that being mainstream or not has absolutely nothing to do with coolness. You're going down a blind alley with this mainstream argument. I need to go to sleep but hold that last thought and I shall return!

Not a band, but

David Bowie. The definition of cool.

oh- don't get me wrong, i'm thoroughly enjoying this thread, and i agree with your sentiments re: blondie

i don't even know what i'm saying to be honest- just broken up with my girlfriend and i'm drunk

Best stick to the Stone Roses and avoid the Smiths for the next few weeks then!

I'd gone off the mainstream bit, to simply ask you in what way would YOU say The Stones were cooler than The Beatles?

oh, i'm not really depressed about it, she was quite a bit older than i am, so it was naturally going to end soon enough, i'll just miss the sex more than anything

but the stone roses will get me through anything, i tend to avoid the smiths since my massive mental breakdown phase a year or so back, so "mersey paradise" and "made of stone" it shall be for the time being :)
