It was a tad different in Stewart times my friend, being King did not mean that you spent your time having tv shots of dancing with the locals to show you were down with the locals like nowadays. it sort of meant a bit more

Well, that's certainly what Charles I thought - I don't think he won that argument did he?

But you're evading the issue: are countries with separate parliaments but a shared head of state independent? I'd say they were - it's the parliament that counts, not the head of state.

Mate, c1 got into probelms because of taxes like the ship tax and failing to call a parliament for any reason other than to raise a few bob. The supremacy of the crown was not at first in issue - not to start with, it was also his deal to raise an irish catholic army to invade england to put him back on the throne that finally did for charles 1. As for James 1 he started the union, well him and the powerful barons of both countries, it had sod all to do with the people. Of course australia is independent, but that happened after two sodding great world wars , democracy and was not done in anything close to Stewart times. Why am I writing this?

Scotland being a small country with big ideas bankrupt itself with the Darien Scheme and thus in the hope of compensation to the once wealthy people of Scotland they forged ahead with the agreement to be governed by Westminster.

Years on the same attitude by the Scots (Brown and Blair) has bankrupt the Union, where to now?

I say give Scotland its tinpot government send all Scottish Politicians back and let the English rule their own. Thus giving the Tories their rightful place as leaders.
