The Boys Own Story, Pavilion Theatre, Brighton - 14-18 September

Here's a goodie, not to be missed ...

The Boy’s Own Story by Peter Flannery

at the Pavilion Theatre, Brighton Dome, September 14-18th

On the stage:– Real turf and a real goal.

In the goal:– John McKenna, the best goalkeeper never to play for England.

Reduced to playing Sunday League football for Saltdean, our boy McKenna remembers the Wembley Final he played; explains what drove him to goal-keeping; confides his hatred of all footballers; and wonders why his life is falling apart.

Shakespeare Globe actor Jem Wall will play McKenna in Peter Flannery’s hilarious and touching play.

Jem’s been in training with Brighton & Hove Albion’s goalkeeping coach John Keeley, and The Boy’s Own Story is the first show to be performed on real grass (watered and mown each night), kindly provided by the ground-staff at Brighton. The goalposts are also courtesy of the club.

Don’t miss a great night out with the beautiful game.

Tickets £10, £8 concessions, £5 under-16s. Ticket Office 01273-709-709, or book online at http://www.brighton-dome.org.uk

Looks good.

Peter Flannery is a top playwright so this could be classy stuff.

Thanks Lord B. There's also an offer of £7.50 discounted entry to current season ticket holders or holders of ticket stubs from this season!

I'll declare an interest: a mate of mine is involved. Any chance of making this a sticky?

I've just looked this up and it's an old play. It was on in London in the early 90s and I didn't see it (nor have ever heard of it).

Don't know how I managed to miss it.

I'll catch it this time round.

Peter Flannery wrote 'Our Friends in the North', one of the best television drama's of the last 20 years. This play was oringinally done by Guy masterson (Richard Burtons nephew) in the early 90's and will be worth seeing. Nice to see theatre getting sticky status on the board. mwaaah!

I'm going on Saturday 18th - after the hilarious and touching play at Withdean in the afternoon.
... from the ridiculous to the sublime?

There's just been a very good piece on Radio Four about this production. A nice quote from John Keeley ... "Football is a team game until the goalkeeper lets a goal in".

Was he better than Peter Schmeichel?

And no mention of Ronan Keating.

I'd call that false advertising...

I've just received a flyer from the Dome, presumably because I'm a season ticket holder, offering tickets at £5 each. Only drawback is that it only applies to the evening of 14 September, when all season ticket holders will be at Withdean for the Wolves match! Doh!

Well, I must say, these are marvellous scenes indeed Trevor: it's been confirmed that the voice of none other than Alistair McGowan is making a special guest appearance in the play as the football commentators who won't leave the keeper alone in his head...

So, how many from NSC are going to this?

Like Lush, I shall be there on the 18th after the entertainment at Withdean.

Maybe they could turn the theatre's fire sprinkler system on the audience and issue them all with ponchos for that authentic South Stand Experience
