GTA III for me, just seemd a little more focused than later games (admittedly haven't played San Andreas though) and the car radio was better then (well Lazlo was anyway). Really didn't enjou GTA IV too much, far too bleak,

The amount of radio content in GTA3 was considerably less than in later versions. Playing it for more than an hour or so would result in the same songs coming up over and over.

The Jamaican station that just played songs from the great Scientist album Scientist Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires, was excellent though.

I'm not sure I ever played San Andreas but I loved Vice City. The free roaming element was so well done. I used spend ages just pootling around exploring. Then when I fancied burning off some stress, I'd lead a huge please chase through the city, hold up in a multi-storey car park and unleash hell on the rozzers below. A bazooker would take care of the helicopter coppers of course. Then, grab a fast car from the car park and jump it off the roof. Such fun.

The PS3 GTA that came a while back didn't seem as good some how.

Very true which is why I preferred it - too much choice in later games

Vice City was AMAZING. The colours, the lights, it was actually brilliant. I was 22 then and could get away with it, not sure how cool I would look playing the latest one at 33.

jesus christ! vice city came out 10 years ago! 10 YEARS!!!! and my favourite GTA III came out 11 years ago! 11 YEARS!!!! Where the f**k has my life gone! good times. tony hawks pro skater 2 took a few hours of my life away as well.

I know San Andreas was a bigger game with broader scope but for me Vice City was the very pinnacle for the look and feel which has just never been matched by any other game ever. It captured the 80s vibe just so well. The songs on the radio were immense. And all the little nods to classic gangster films of the era were excellent from the curly haired lawyer out of Carlito's Way to the near identical Scarface mansion.

Being able to buy properties, including that awesome nightclub, was the icing on the cake.

As much as I'm looking forward to the new game I don't think there'll ever be another one that captures me just like Vice City did.

Absolutely agree with this 100%

Couldn't have put it better myself

GTA IV is incredibly under rated. I fear the modern GTA fan rates a release on whether they can fly planes or not and how many pretty colours make up the average screen. GTA IV had SO much to it. It gets a lot of flack because people bought it expecting to be able to muck about like on SA but once you scratch beneath the surface, play the game and missions, it's wholly absorbing. It's in a different league to SA, really, not saying one is better than the other, just completely different games

GTA III for me - before they crammed it full of everything, this is a gem of a game and pretty much perfect given when it was released. Remember Zelda on the N64, and being awestruck by what you were playing? That.

San Andreas was a great game and the best I've played. Everything since has had a rushed 'that'll do' feel about it while San Andreas had pretty much endless fun. I sometimes wonder if it is nostalgia but whenever I hear songs like 'white wedding' or 'all my exes live in Texas' I fondly remember those countless hours spent in a dark room spray painting gang symbols in an imaginary world.

I will probably buy the next one though at some stage I may have to accept that I am just too old.

Did anyone else play 'Driver'? GTA owes more to that game than to the original top-down PS1 game.
