San Andreas by a country mile, and then some. A truly epic game which may never be replicated again, well the 'how you felt' while playing it part won't be. To me the character interaction took it the extra distance the later versions have missed out on, going to the gym, martial arts training etc.
The theme was incredible, voice over by Ray Liotta & the whole 80s theme was amazing, the car radio, you could just drive around for hours listening to the radio in the car, or just park on the seafront, watch the sun going down listening to some chilling out tunes, then go an start a gang war or see a prossie and then kill her, fab!

Torn between SA and VC. The atmosphere of VC was brilliant but SA had more to do and also had countryside (the first time I emerged in the sprawling countryside in SA after driving through a railway tunnel to try and evade the police ranks as one of my favourite gaming memories).

The only downsides to SA for me were the diet and gym stuff

If I had to choose I'd probably go with SA

WTF? Where is the ORIGINAL GTA?

Only played two of the GTA games. Loved SA, and halfway through IV at the moment. For me, whilst IV has so many more "modern" add-ons ie email, making friendships for rewards, etc, the fact is there feels like there is little to nothing you can do outside of the main missions that is fulfilling. SA on the other hand had so many fun and quirky things you could do from the car/bike/plane schools to the acquiring of gang territorys. It was more enjoyable, the story was a lot better, and quite frankly is the best game ever released on the PS2 imo. Looking forward to V a lot now more details are out!!

Psssst, you're talking about Vice City, not San Andreas.

I'd love to see the designers go back to London again. The series has been revisiting the old locations throughout its history and Liberty City has been done three times now. Time for London to get the 3D treatment

If we're talking personal preference then San Andreas for me. I poured hours and hours and hours into that game. It had so much going on.

If we're talking in terms of importance then GTA3 by a long margin. A game like that had never been done before, not successfully anyway. It essentially sold the Playstation2, much like Halo did with the Xbox, and paved the way for open world gaming as we know it today.

Owned them all on the PS1, PS2 and PS3. Loved the classic originals on the PS1 with the top down view. The GTA London expansion pack was great fun to play. The great thing with these games is that there are so much to do. i used to like going on my own rampages and shooting up everything in site. GTA SA with the jet pack, I used to fly to the top of a building when my wanted level maxed out and pick of the helicoptors with the rocket launcher. Oh fun days!

Vice City was AMAZING. The colours, the lights, it was actually brilliant. I was 22 then and could get away with it, not sure how cool I would look playing the latest one at 33.

Under 'other'. I did play GTA II on my PS1 when I was very young though, maybe about 11. Was alright at the time but I didn't really 'get it'.

So you excluded it from the poll because you didn't 'get it'? I didn't realise that is how polls work!

As it's a current topic I wondered what peoples favourite GTA was.

Mine has got to be San Andreas, so much to do could spend years on that game, however Vice City was the first of its kind and had a great 'feel' to the game in sunny Miami (and great songs on the radio).

What the fcuk is a GTA

GTA III for me, just seemd a little more focused than later games (admittedly haven't played San Andreas though) and the car radio was better then (well Lazlo was anyway). Really didn't enjou GTA IV too much, far too bleak,
