The best two midfielders in my 30+ years were Horton and Wilson, both of whom got forward to score goals, admittedly most of Hortons were probably penalties but still, think he is worth a mention.

Nobby Horton without a doubt as he drove us through two divisions leading the finest team I have ever seen wearing the stripes. Jimmy Case had his days, most of them Cup ones and was hard as nails but I still can't see past Nobby who scored some crucial goals as we went through two divisions as well as captaining the side. He didn't do too shabbily after he left us either.

Danny Wilson - 135 - 33 goals - 1 per 4.1 games
Nobby - 218 games - 33 goals - 1 goal every 6.6 games
Dean Wilkins - 335 - 31 goals - 1 per 11 games
Jimmy (Head) Case - 127-10 goals - 1 per 12.7 games
(not counting his second spell when he should not have still been playing)

Goals aren't the be all and end all of this debate - but just so we have the facts to hand.

Not forgetting Nobby had to play in the same side as greedy old Peter Ward making it harder for him to get on the scoresheet

I would go for Nobby Horton as he just comes into the 30 years. What about Gary Nelson who was a very attack minded midfielder/ winger/striker dependant on how you wished to describe him.

Peter Ward - 79 goals at a goal every couple of games (178 appearances)

And to keep the stats frenzy going, BZ was a goal every 1.6 games, scoring 76 in 125 matches.

Neither of these relevant to the midfielder debate other than to show that Danny Wilson's goal in every 4 games is not half bad!

Attacking midfielder ? Now how many in midfield ? 2,3 or 4 ? If four and i have seen many games with Albion playing 'four across' then. Gerry Ryan. :bigwave:

Steve Sidwell was one of the best ive seen in his short spell here.

have to agree. what about chippie? scored a fair few crackers down the years and was a great servent. as for hammond....he was quality but not as effective as either of the above

Bit of an echo, but Horton and Wilson for me.Sully started as one of those old fashioned wide players. What were they called?

So the conclusion of the thread appears to be that the best attacking midfielder was one of Nobby Horton, Danny Wilson or Jimmy Case.

On last night's performance, would adding one of those three have "completed the line up"? Is the attacking midfielder the missing ingredient as people have been suggesting?
