Just a thought but for our friends in other countries the above images must give a real knot in the stomach

The country pubs near here get packed on weekends, with busman's holiday types.

So yeah, if you want to come out on w/ends and wait for service amongst a rabble of people complaining about parking and getting a table, then it's highly recommended.

Better to stroll the rolling hills and fields with picnic stuff, or go further into the country to proper unchanged pubs that haven't gone 'McDonalds' and cleared out the fireplace of soot and copper pots and painted the old oak roof beams with gloss brown paint.

I had some utter twot asking me if I brought my dog to the local pub to meet women - (like I either need a dog to do that (??) or might have considered leaving the furry bundle at home all evening when the pub welcome her?)

He then asked what kind of car I drove, and when I told him I forgot but I know it's a French one, he blithered on with "oh I suppose you speak French as well" :lolol:
(my French teacher was a drunk! I never cared about learning it)

I expect his date fancied me, eh?

Can't choose. Beach on a hot day. Downs for walking, views, pubs etc. Do Brightonians realise how lucky they are.

I agree with you but for me the beach just wins even though it's not as good as many others in England it is great to just pop down there and enjoy it, I love the sound of the sea and I dont have far to go to get there.
The Downs are breathtakingly beautiful and I always enjoy a walk when the weather is fine and you can get to appreciate them fully but they are more of a hassle to get to.

Beach. The undercliff walk has always been one of my favourite things about Brighton and I love a crowded beach in town on a hot day, preferably with a messy night out in town afterwards. The Downs are just fairly unexceptional small chalky hills. Boring.

Beach purely because it is easily accessed via walking/public transport. There's nothing worse than finding a top quality beer in a country pub, and calling it a day at one cos you are driving.

Nah, just need a small bit of planning. Examples:
Opentop 77 to Devils Dyke, walk down to Fulking Shepherd and Dog. Great beer garden, beer, food, walk back up, 77 back to Brighton. OR
Train to Lewes, walk up the Cliffe (quick snifter in the Gardners Arms), beautiful dry valley walk, up over Mount Caburn, down to Glynde, Harveys, food in the Trevor Arms which is next to Glynde Station direct train back to Brighton.
I am fortunate can cycle from my house between Lewes and Kingston, up over the Downs to Woodingdean, swoop down to Rottingdean, undercliff walk to the beach, dip in sea, visit mates, bars, peace cafe etc then put bike on train back to Lewes. Perfect!
We are so lucky having both.

Hove, f***ing ACTUALLY.
I have to say, I took the present MISS ROUGVIE yesterday up to Devils Dyke, we had an hours walk to the pub, had a rather (surprising) good lunch in 'The Dyke' then went on a 4 hour trek along some of the best countryside in the British Isles.

The again I see the sea every day I step outside my flat in Palmeira Square, so I guess I get the best of both worlds!!!!
