Not necessarily. Not by a long chalk. There's countless examples of otherwise sane, rational people committing atrocities such as this where they are entirely politically motivated. Islam is an ideology and if you've been born into that and lived, eaten and slept it all your life and given that the Koran is morally dubious and bloodthirsty and if it's been taught by medieval hillbillies then it's not so difficult to understand why some people do the things they do. It's not because they're mentally ill but because they've been brainwashed.

So once again, I put blame not at the kid but at Islam.

History is littered with perfectly sane people committing murderous acts due to their commitment to an ideology.

At the risk of invoking Godwin's law, there were millions of perfectly sane individuals who through a belief system that was validated on their own paradigm of supremacy were prepared to commit (and did) unimaginable acts of brutality. As you correctly identify the issue at the heart of those who can behave this way is ideology. It is not mental illness, and they are no more cerebrally retarded than the half wits who think otherwise.

When perfectly sane individuals are consumed by an ideology with so much hate and/or contempt for their fellow citizens that they see them as bovines ready for slaughter, then it's all the easier to slaughter them. Snd that is what we see with all these attacks......

The ideology needs challenging and crushing otherwise the people will vote for someone prepared to crush it......Trump is a perfect example of this in the US.

If the people can't vote for someone that will then the alternative could be worse........a country with a cultural construct like France is ripe for it. Someone needs to get a grip and rapid.

Then most of you apologists are rather naïve, if you think that people doing dreadful things to others such as we heard about last night, must necessarily have mental health issues. If you hate enough, and have been brainwashed enough, then, sadly, sane and otherwise "normal" people are capable of anything. Also, somewhere in the mix in this case is the idea of Islam, whether you want to see it or not.

As you say somewhere in the mix is the idea of Islam.
This is entirely my point...

Previous posters have blamed Islam as the cause of the problem.
It is not the cause of the problem. In the same way as Christianity is not to blame for Americans who bomb abortion clinics.

ISIS/Daesh/IS whatever you want to call it, are responsible for these atrocities.
They inspire random acts of violence by the mentally ill and recruit and brainwash the vulnerable.
I am not apologising for them.

The same people who say we should not automatically assume the attacker is inspired by Islam seem to automatically assume he had mental health issues. There seems to be a reluctance to accept that ideology can inspire killing and this flies in the face of historical reality from the Crusades through to Nazism. Islam inspired murder is just the latest example and I find it odd that there is such denial.

Of course not, I don't think there is an over-riding ideology as such but there are plenty of verses where killing of non-Muslims isn't only justified but promoted. If a particularly bloodthirsty Imam or branch of Islam makes a big point of that then in an impressionable mind it can become God's work.

In this case, yes.

Cause and effect . . . . . hard to 'prove' . . . if the killer were otherwise of sound mental state then sure. Cause and effect. Personally I don't appreciate any form of belief 'system', i.e., that relies on an old book and interpreters (holy men) to deliver up six impossible things to believe before breakfast. The more you surrender your will and 'believe' the more easily you are manipulated.

My take is that racists bigoted elements infesting Islam (some Imams, obviously 'ISIL') are like lighbulbs to the moths of the mad and the evil among those of Muslim tradition who have personality disoder or frank mental illness, plus the nasty *******s among them, plus other soft headed weirdos with no Muslim tradition who become converts. It has sufficient momemtum now to keep on attracting said persons. On and on it goes . . . and as it goes on, it becomes increasingly acceptable and easy to engage, for those young people who are sufficiently mad or bad. Statstically small, but enough to stab or bomb a few 'nonbelievers' in Europe and Asia on a weekly basis. Unacceptable . . .

What surprises me is that no manistream party has done the maths, worked out that another atrocity is inevitable, and offered a solution, no matter how draconian. Perhaps our secret service is sufficiently good that it nips every plot in the bud. But the spotty teenager who drinks beer and chases girls, or tries to, and flips between internet porn and internet fundamentalism, and then decides to go for it . . . . how can you anticipate this? Even internment (and I am not advocating this) won't stop the 'converts'. No obvous solution that does not involve herding up law abiding UK citizens and interning them? I can't think of anything. Any suggestions, anyone??? Worrying and depressing.

Have you forgot about the Nice attack already....

Guns are a sight more efficient, apparently the US manufactures enough ammunition each year to shoot each American citizen 30 times.

I still would prefer my odds of being shot in a crowd rather than a 6ft wide 10ton truck hurtling towards me in a crowd any day of the week.

You can see a truck, try looking out for bullets.

I am, sadly, beginning to subscribe to this.

Sadly, me too. Immigrants to a new country need to integrate, as successive waves of immigrants to this country have done over the years. Sadly, and worryingly, we seem to have too many recently who have no intention of integrating.

Absolutely right. Religious extremism is the excuse these mentally ill people use to justify carrying out the the crazy urges they have to harm others.

It's not religious, it's mental illness.

To stop these sick individuals we must do more to stop the ones who are influencing them, by urging them to do these acts of violence in the false name of religion.
It's nothing to do with mental health....Most of these people are already brainwashed severely and their life is all about their religion. Now it wouldn't take much to go that extra mile to brainwash further especially when you get many Virgins and you're told you're basically better off dead. Its an ideology that's way ahead of other religions when it comes to life itself.

Many say he's a young kid and was vulnerable etc etc...but it's very clear how easy it is to recruit these young people and in the western society they just can't live with or accept our way of life.Of course most will get on in the western countries although most live together in certain areas and they don't have any interest in integrating although will happily bring their world they left here.

I'm not sure what the awnsers are and don't see how it can ever end but this has been brewing up for decades with segregated cultures and religions throughout Europe.Yes we're a accepting nation that welcomes anyone, but it's becoming so so bad that you just don't see how it will ever get better and unless religion is banished full stop you will see blood shed forever it seems....just the beginning :nono:

Unless religion is addressed properly the world is facked that's for sure.....For centuries there's been religious wars but now these wars are spreading everywhere as people move anyway.

Ok fair enough. I know that you were not actually apologising for them. However you have no evidence that they inspire the mentally ill - plenty of posts have given examples of how quite normal folk can change for the worse, given a diet of hatred for years on end. Islam can clearly be interpreted by some to do the most appalling acts of violence.

Any form of religion, in my opinion of course is a form of mental illness in itself.
But all the time it brings a degree of control over people, government's across the world will tolerate it and use it to their advantage. Anyone who fails to see a correlation between violence within the religion of Islam is kidding themselves.
The sooner religion is wiped from the face of this planet, the better.

And would you call years of abuse towards innocent children carried out by those that preach love and peace from the pulpit in the Catholic and Church Of England religions and then covered up by the leader of the religion to save it from embarrassment messed up, I would. Not to mention that they also see women as second class citizens who until recently were deemed not suitable for a top job.
Not defending Islam at all but some serious misgivings have and still are being carried out in the name of religion of all faiths around the world.
I would not really separate terrorism from seriously harming children for life.

Religion.......its Father Christmas for grown ups isn't it?
Read a fvcking science book for fvcks sake!
Said it before.......world would be a better place if religion was banned...or even better...never existed!

PS...if I'm wrong I'm going straight to hell anyway with all the shit I've done!!!!!

Sounds like some of the buggers are out to enact that equation.

If I was a German liberal I would be getting a bit cheesed off with all these rapists and jihadis that Frau Merkel has thrown the door open to. It's clearly quite a good time to consider binning the EU before Germany first or whoever start demanding that everyone shares the burden with the fatherland. At least we can look to David Davis to keep us out of the redistribution of migrants that is SURELY coming soon.

I am joking incidentally.
