new ball in 10overs too.

Loved the slow-mo of the ball hitting Strauss' bat handle, the flex was amazing!

319-7 at close. Pretty happy with that.

319/7 at close of play.

Now we all know that is disappointing, but I can't help feeling that commentator and the BBC website are exadurating Australias position. Yes, they've edged it but we could still get 400 which might be about par, especially given the fact that our bowlers are better than theirs. Collingwoods effectiveness as a support bowler might prove to be the key. Simon Jones was effective at mopping up the tail, can Collingwood do the same thing on Saturday.

Hmmm, I'm not too unhappy with that. Vaughan giving away his wicket could prove decisive. Strauss and Flintoff looked very good.
If Jones and Giles can hang around for an hour or so we could get into a semi-comfortable position. The encouraging thing is that the ball is moving about a bit today and that will interest Hoggard and Freddie. Don't forget also that Harmison likes bowling at the OVal.

After day one the game is in the balance.

The tail still have their part to play. Being a bowler down we really need another 50 runs plus to feel confident.

What I'd like to see is Jones and Giles grind out as many as they can and really make the Aussies work for the wickets, maybe bat until midday. Obviously the new ball will make this task difficult, but these runs and any tail resistance could make all the different.

340ao = so-so, 380 ao = great position.

Honours even I think.

Intriguing day tomorrow - if we can put on, say, 70/80 to get us as near to 400 as possible, it puts pressure on the Aussies to score pretty quickly to try and make a game of it, knowing what the weather might do over the weekend.

Shane Warne - legend btw

I can't believe that Australia had 6.5 hrs in the field today and still couldn't bowl 90 overs ! Warne bowled 34 of them !!

All this from a team who must win the match .....:shootself

If it wasn't for the drug-taking, wife cheating, fat slob we would be home and dry in this series.

Joking aside, respect for Shane. To take 5 on that wicket on the first day, for only just over 100 runs is excellent.

I think anything less than 350 on this pitch will be a failure by England. I was hoping for in excess of 400. My concern is that Jones will be missed. Prior to the start of this series, he's been viewed as a support bowler, but he's really shone and I fear we'll miss him (hope I'm wrong).

At the start of today and until our first wicket fell, I was reckoning on 450 - 500 to win the match and batting until Friday tea, 400 for a draw and batting to Friday lunch, with 350 or lower putting us possibly in a losing position.

I still hold by these figures. We have in nearly all of the aussies innings wiped out their higher order, Wayne must be close to having the best average in this series for the aussies.

It will be a tense day tommorow, and isn't there some fact that in a crucial last test of a series, Ponting sides never deliver, whilst Vaughan has a great track record.
