Abort, retry, fail
'Yes' not the end in Falmer fight
By Lawrence Marzouk

The Seagulls Party has vowed to pursue its campaign for an Albion stadium at Falmer - even if tomorrow's decision on the proposed 22,000 seater is a "yes".

After ten years without a permanent home, Brighton and Hove Albion is set to find out tomorrow whether plans for a new football ground have been approved.

Almost two years ago, club supporters celebrated on the street as John Prescott gave the green light to the proposal.

But the ruling was quashed in the High Court months later after it was revealed the former Deputy Prime Minister had made a mistake in the wording of the document. Seagulls Party members said yesterday that they would not be complacent about another positive outcome tomorrow.

The political group was formed as a direct challenge to the ruling Liberal Democrat group at Lewes District Council which has been fighting the Falmer stadium.

The pro-stadium group confirmed its status as a force in Sussex politics by polling almost a quarter of the vote in its first election. Candidate Ed Bassford came third in the Lewes District Council Ouse Valley and Ringmer ward by-election last year with 359 votes. And at the local elections in May, the party fielded four candidates who polled more 1,600 votes between them. Mr Bassford said he feared the decision could be the subject of an appeal by Lewes council or Falmer Parish Council.

He said: "I am not as fearful of any effective appeal this time compared to last. But the Seagulls Party will be there watching all of this and bringing some pressure to bear.

"The fans in general and members of the party are fed up things are still going on and there is not great anticipation of dancing in the streets. We have been here before so many times.

"But there is some anticipation, although it is not like anticipating a great victory, more like an important goal."

Hazel Blears, the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, is likely to reveal her decision to the club tomorrow. Labour MPs from Brighton and Hove delivered a letter to Ms Blears on Friday, urging her not to delay the decision any further.

I trust the op goes well. My mind tells me it's the tiniest of slits, slapping and shoving a few petulant tubes back in place and asking you to leave quietly and taking it easy in Loveville, Louisiana for a few weeks.

At my work everyone has cards for all forms of occasions. A couple of weeks ago one was passed around and it came to me. From the messages already scrawled in there it looked as if tragedy had struck and my face and hands both hung in nerve as i thought of something other than the "We're behind you"s or "God loves us all in equal measure"s that some had written. I speedily scraped an "I wish you well, and am here if you crave my ear at any time." I saw the card-receiver upon her return to work a couple of weeks later and gave her a wink and a wave, too afraid to ask "how are you?" in case she told me and i had to deal with news of her dead mother or a recent rape. She waved back, and a little later asked me why i'd written what i had when she was recovering neatly and silently from having her tonsils out the other week. 'Ballbags', i thought, and claimed it was just something being absurdly wrong in my brain repair that day. We swapped smiles, i asked how her throat was now and our day went simply on.
