The Amex - In danger of becoming sterile

Something needs to be done. The atmosphere is in danger of becoming sterile. This was shockingly noticeable at the CPFC game when our fans went AWOL for the most important game of the season.

Leeds sang us off the park for most of the game and Hull City outsang us for 80% of the game.

The WALL of noise noticeable in the early games is sadly lacking now. Why is this ?. Has the novelty worn off already ?.

I am all for a family friendly environment but the experiece imo is in danger of becoming like a day out at Alton Towers and with respect Mums and Dads with their 5 year olds will not create an intimidating atmosphere for the away teams to face and whether we like it or not, this will add to our chances of winning games.

The exodus with 6 minutes to go before half time was shocking and embarrassing. Unless you are desperate for a p*ss there is no excuse for this. The team need you there , supporting them and you cannot do that from trap 2 or in the queue for a Steak and Ale Pie.

The seat behind me has become like pass the parcel with a variety of newbies coming along. Don't get me wrong we need the newbies and they should be welcomed with open arms but we also must not forget that we need the die hards and the people who show passion and vocal support to drive the team on. I am the only one who stands up and vents at the ref and opposition in my area , the rest sit down, applauding occassion or like the bloke behind me slagging off Liam Bridcutt all game to which I " had a word ".

The worry is, any display of passion will be studied by the CTV gang looking to ban people. All good and well for genuine offences but we are in danger of becoming too fluffy and friendly and I need some genuine passion from the fans.

Thank God for the Northstanders who try and create some noise and passion even though we only have about 2 songs as the West stand appears to be going AWOL now.

What is to be done ?.

I think it was always going to settle down,it is still a great atmosphere, just compare it to Withdean, there wasn't a great deal to get the crowd going yesterday.

100% agree US. The area I sit in in WSL is fast becomming a library. Yesterday I actuall lost my rag and shouted "Wake the f*** up!" and "two of us singing" as they all sat in stoney silence around me. Apart from a couple of bods who tried to join in after that it was me and my brother amongst corpses. Rubbish. Oh, and the constant getting up and going out during the game and leaving early is getting silly. Me and my brother were reduced to ressurecting the Withdean "rush, rush, rush for the bus" song at the end.

You're kidding right? That was one of the most exciting 0-0's I've seen in over 30 years of football. If you can't get up of that you really should be at home doing the Sky Super Sunday thang.

People got wrapped up with the whole Zeitgeist of a new stadium and several wins on the trot helped. Since we have started to meet the better teams in this league we don't look so clever though. If you want people to make a noise it'll take more than yesterdays performance to get a lot of people excited. It doesn't matter who is playing who there just wasn't that much to get worked up about.

Maybe you should cut back on the caffeine as well.

It is tiring reading all this rubbish. Hull fans were quiet all game. I know I sit next to them. Do any if you lot actually go to away games and notice how quiet home fans are at EVERY other ground?

We have got it good believe me. It is going to be quiter some games than others, get used to it.

So the team have got to be tearing the opposition apart before people start singing and trying to create an atmosphere? There was plenty yesterday to get the fans going. Even if there wasn't it's the fans who lift the players when they're struggling, that's our duty. Like I said, if you want to join the "I pay good money so entertain me or I'm going to sit here like a lemon" go sit in your front room with the rest.

I wasn't there yesterday, but was at the Palace game. It has to be tension. The honeymoon period is over, yes, but we had chronically lost our form this month and I don't think the crowd is quieter because of the results, moreso because of the tension and nerves of a losing streak. Hopefully yesterday's goalless draw and perhaps a win on Tuesday night might settle fears.

I couldn't make it yesterday but listened on BBC radio humberside they kept complementing the noise and atmosphere and at the end of the game say they see us in a top ten finish

I think you've got that wrong, I actually think the North Stand needs to be the conductor for the rest of the stadium and they're struggling to find their voice. The ultra song appears to have died a death, where's the inspiration coming from? Next to us in the family stand I could see the east end of the North Stand getting frustrated with the lack of people in there joining in. Hull had only 1500 in their end and sounded louder. I'm not sure the other stands are going to start many songs, but around us everyone is keen to join in once a song is going. Even a 'Gus Poyet's Blue and White army' repeated for 10-20mins would be a start.

I have an idea. Let's set up a group of 14 year olds to sing songs from St Pauli and other teams on the continent, then we can get 200 people in the North Stand singing and nobody else in the ground. Yeah, and we can call ourselves Ultras, that would be kool wouldn't it?

The atmosphere was fine yesterday. A tense, 0-0 draw against Hull City with relatively few moments of incident, and little to berate the ref about. It could be better, and it many games it will, but you have to accept that the noise is not going to be amazing every game unless the team is, which is pretty unlikely!!

Exactly. The atmosphere is always likely to be better for a Leeds or West Ham at night. I suspect Barnsley on a Sunday won't be in that league. But that's just football, and anyone who has been for years knows that.

There was never going to be quite the noise there was for Doncaster at all other games, but we just want the general level to be kept up.

It is interesting though that other teams (and I mean other teams without a Palace-style axe to grind) think the atmosphere is good. It shows that around the country, generally, atmospheres are not as good as they used to be.

But even when the North Stand sang West Stand give us a song all we got was a ripple of Albion! Everyone points the finger at the North, which has been quiet for the last 2 games, but for the WSU is poor!

spot on

surely theres enough people on this thread who go to away games that know that the away fans are generally louder and outsing the home fans at 9 out of 10 games. i really dont think the atmosphere is bad at all compared to other stadiums. if true it does worry me that people are getting bans for swearing/chucking a few gestures towards away fans....we dont want this family atmosphere to be to inviting

I was in the East stand and i didn't think the atmosphere was too bad at all. There were a few quiet spells, mostly when we were defending but that is fairly normal. There were times at Withdean when you could literally hear a pin drop for long periods of the game.

Don't get me wrong, it's far from the worse atmospheres as a whole I've sat in by a mile. It's just that I've never sat amongst so many who don't utter a single chant or shout, not even at Withdean. There's absolutely no reason for my section of the WSL to be like that as it's position between the North and WSU makes it perfect for joining in.
