I did exactly the same . . . my first reaction was to see how the crowd reacted at that end to see if there was something more sinister starting to happen. So depressing that a few numpty heads should think that's a good idea in the times we currently live in. It only needed a few people to run for it to have potentially escalated into a blind panic of thousands of innocent fans of all ages trying to get out.

I don't want a derby / rival's game without away fans but something needs to change for next season. I think there's a few matches where away fans can only arrive on club coaches. With the coach park so close to the away end, I'd think that must be an idea to consider for next year. Palace fans get coaches from Selhurst, en mass direct to the Amex away fans coach park and straight into the ground. Not allowed to go anywhere else. No entry if you haven't arrived by coach. The coach park was design to take 40 ish coaches x 50 seats = circa 2000 away fans which is OK. Straight out, onto coaches after game with police escort - no need to escort them onto trains, past the North Stand. No need to have to deal with them at Falmer, Brighton or Lewes train stations. Make it 12.00 on a sunday.

The main culprits were the ones who stormed the gates so I think the above would only be effective by using good intel to track the non-ticket morons who travel independently, and of course manning the exits/entrances for gatecrashers. Keeping the two groups completely separate would certainly help the OB.

But, as Newick Seagull said, if the only way into the away end is to step off a coach from Selhurst, into a corridor of stewards/OB that has sealed off the away part of the South Stand and straight through the gates then that farce would have been avoided. OB stop anyone even getting near any entrance/exit for the away end other than from a coach and non-one else can force their way in.

Make it very clear, months in advance that this is how it will work on match day so that Palace fans from, for example, Crawley, know that they will have to go north to Selhurst first and can't just make the [easier/shorter] trip south by themselves and thus can make an informed decision about even buying a ticket.

Then... use the hour long coach journey to PROPERLY search the little sh1ts carrying pyros and throw them off the coach before it reaches the ground (and ideally before it evens stops moving!).

EDIT.... A likewise for the return leg.... we coach from the Amex, straight there, walk an "exclusive corridor" created by the OB from the coach to the away end. After the game... same in reverse... out of the ground, onto a coach, back to your home stadium, NO EXCEPTIONS.

Sounds like the only solution going forward, and those that broke into the ground under the cover of a smoke bomb distraction have only themselves to blame.

Fair point. This does sound like a good way to deal with it.

Meanwhile how do the home fans travelling to the game get from the coach/park & ride park to the stadium - the Amex is unlike many grounds where the away end isn't hidden behind bars.

At Selhurst there is a road running up past the away end where coaches are parked and no home fans CAN enter or NEED to enter

Uni car park is sacrificed for that match.

I'm not advocating this as something that happens for every game.. just with our "friends" up the road, a proportion of whom can't behave properly.

It's a massive inconvenience but better than the crowd trouble and stewards being hospitalised.

Sorry, but tough. That's the price paid for an incident free fixture. And however much we believe we wouldn't resort to the behaviours of their lowest scum supporters, whatever we do to them we have to accept being done in return.

The alternatives are crowd trouble or no away fans being allowed in to either fixture. Lessons learned from last week and all that means we shouldn't just hope for a better behaved group visiting next time if they manage to stay up next season.... they didn't earn respect, so they don't get given it.

I live in south London. How do you propose I participate in your plan when we visit Selhurst? Luckily I suspect the authorities would agree your plan is nonsense.

Indeed. They cannot be trusted to make their own way to the match without bringing and using fire crackers - so will have to be 'bubbled' in future, unfortunately.
