[Football] The Always Ultras - utter embarrassment to English football

When the first one went off, for a very brief moment I thought "Shit", then immediately remembered we were playing Palace.

I did exactly the same . . . my first reaction was to see how the crowd reacted at that end to see if there was something more sinister starting to happen. So depressing that a few numpty heads should think that's a good idea in the times we currently live in. It only needed a few people to run for it to have potentially escalated into a blind panic of thousands of innocent fans of all ages trying to get out.

I don't want a derby / rival's game without away fans but something needs to change for next season. I think there's a few matches where away fans can only arrive on club coaches. With the coach park so close to the away end, I'd think that must be an idea to consider for next year. Palace fans get coaches from Selhurst, en mass direct to the Amex away fans coach park and straight into the ground. Not allowed to go anywhere else. No entry if you haven't arrived by coach. The coach park was design to take 40 ish coaches x 50 seats = circa 2000 away fans which is OK. Straight out, onto coaches after game with police escort - no need to escort them onto trains, past the North Stand. No need to have to deal with them at Falmer, Brighton or Lewes train stations. Make it 12.00 on a sunday.

My dad used to take me in the 70s when I was 7 - 17 years old (school nights and all) and it was far more dangerous than it is nowadays. I certainly wouldn’t call him a bad parent.

Perhaps you should have a word with yourself about how much modern kids are mollycoddled by their parents and applaud those who let their kids live a little.

I wouldnt take my under 10s midweek until they are that - thats my choice though & all parents know their kids & (mostly) whats best for them

As far from intimidating as can be, watching the 'Ultras' (LOL) was a bit like watching a monkey pen at London Zoo - trying to see mannerisms that could be similar to humans (and I did try), but generally laughing at them.

I'm hoping there won't be a next season, we are still in the PL and they are in the Championship.

Steve Parish has made a rod for his own back with the Ultras, he's backed them completely until now and is in a deep hole about what to do with them both with the authorities and the other Palace fans. The Ultras will all have been identified during the day, with and without their masks. All of them...f**k, they even posed for photos as a whole group before the game so the police know exactly who is who.

The video footage will be examined and pretty much every single one of them who broke in or who lit a flare or chucked a banger or caused aggro will be identified and Parish will be more than happy to ban them because it solves the problem of a group of fans who have become a public embarrassment without him having to lose any more face over this.

Spot on. He doesn’t really have a choice now. Even the FSF (who seemed to initially be looking for poor Palace fans who were ‘mistreated’ by police and stewards) have now come out and criticised the few morons who caused all the issues.

Yes, but times have changed. I was at Sellhusrt when the BHA support made monky chants every time Hillaire got the ball, and the home lot did the same every time our black player (was it Ramsey?) got the ball. I joined in with the monkey chanting. We all did. Half the crowd were smoking. There was not a female or black supporter to be seen. Me and some mates went there for another game, had four pints each and drove home. Unthinkable today. Being a bit more resistant to wankerdom is a sign of progress, not something to be mocked. As I have noted in the past, people with 'old skool' values get old and die and are replaced by people who think differently. I have seen it at work with sexism and bullying. Things have changed for the better, and that is good.

on social media there are videos of eastern Europeans ( and scandinavians) letting off fireworks and flares in the stadiums and the comments on them are mostly around " how fantastic" " How brilliant" " that is showing passion"etc...

Shepherded by the OB to a drafty cold section of beach by 10a.m and held there until the last train back to London (with a strong OB presence) and arrests at the slightest hint of naughties? perhaps interviewed under caution too, and details offered to Palarse with a view to stadium bans - I really believe the bulk of palarse don't want them either.

Quite interesting reading the "in fighting" on the Palace forums. A common excuse being that the stadium isn't for purpose (yes really) and difficult to get to.....

Maybe they should follow me down

I come done (usually) via Mid Sussex Seagulls but often make my own way down. On a few occasions get the train all the way back.

As do a number of my neighbours. I know of at least 10 who do a similar journey and just train it. A few I know but I recognise the faces on the way back.

It's a frankly clutching at straws remarkable excuse.

One thing the Amex isn't is difficult to get to from South London.

Which ever way I do it you hit Clapham Junction around 6:45 on a Saturday, 11:45 on a night game.

You are East Croydon obviously earlier.

Coming down a piece of piss. I prefer the Lewes route but have often queued up at Brighton.

It's a good point.

Any palace fan who wanted to avoid the inevitable kettling and problems getting to the AMEX could have gone via Lewes.

My last comment on the Tuesday mess. I'll admit to being very confused about the football authorities in this country.

A few players surround as referee who's done something dopey - and the club are fined massively.

A manager hints that a referee might be a bit off his game - fined massively.

A player dives - awkward to see if it was real or not - anyway he's banned for several games, immediately.

A club's supporters cause a senior policeman to state that he has "never seen such a concerted attempt to cause disorder" and make an evening out at a match a pretty inconvenient and unpleasant experience for many - and........ nothing happens.

Why have there been no statements from the Premier League or the FA with serious sanctions being discussed - fines, points deductions, ground closure, etc etc. Sure Palace will ban anyone they find to have been guilty - and my guess is we'll hear little more of that ever again.

UEFA have many problems, FIFA too, but they are very swift to issue massive financial fines for fireworks being used in stadia in their matches - and will close grounds for such behaviour.

For clarity I believe BHAFC cannot be blamed for opposing fans deciding to cause orchestrated mayhem - maybe the policing strategies could have been better - and no sanctions are to due to the club.

But Palace should be suffering from public condemnation - from the authorities in this country - and unless I have missed it, there has been nothing.
