Who's Next?
Please forgive the indulgence, but…
Reading through the later parts of the thread about the Albion fan who got banned and the IFO's report, some people were commenting on what they thought the role of The Albion Roar should or could be.
From our point of view - and Ady is with me on this - we're just a couple of amateur gobshites who like to invite our mates in to spout off about the Albion - pretty much in the same way as many do in the pub, on NSC, or wherever. Our chosen medium is radio, and you're invited to tune in. Or tune out.
Now and then, we'll have a guest on who is part of the Albion, or the catering, or an ex-player, or someone from AITC. Not every Albion-related story gets out, so it's good to have a chat about their experiences or their profession. We feel it makes for something mildly entertaining and hopefully informative. We have them on basically because that's what we feel like doing.
Someone suggested that we are (or could be) an updated version of Gull's Eye. This caught us on the hop a little because this was never the intention of the show - to be a mouthpiece for the fans. It's always been a concern of mine (don't know about Ady) regarding the insistence that there should be supporters representation on the club's board of directors; how can one or two fans represent the concerns of - in this instance - 20,000 people? Similarly, we're not convinced of the argument that our radio show should take on that role. Perhaps someone could make a convincing case…?
I digress. The show has been going for about eight years, starting with Jonny, Richie, Murray and Paula (I've been involved for nearly four years, Ady for about two and a bit), and since then it has evolved into something with a self-imposed slightly wider remit. My point is - we get the occasional comment on here or in real life about the show. Mostly positive, thankfully. But the fact is, we frankly have no idea how many listen in, what people make of any given show (save the odd comment here and there), or what people think generally.
Neither of us have received any formal training as to how to present a show, and a few prep notes aside, we generally wing the whole thing for 55 minutes. We see ourselves as merely a pair of happy-clappy fans offloading our (hopefully honest) opinions.
We'd always like to see if we can improve the show, so if you'll excuse the indulgence, what is The Albion Roar to you? What do you like about it? How can it be improved? Do you care?
I'm probably opening Pandora's Box to a whole heap of grief, and we can't promise to take everything on board. We're just curious, like. Cheers.
