Please forgive the indulgence, but…

Reading through the later parts of the thread about the Albion fan who got banned and the IFO's report, some people were commenting on what they thought the role of The Albion Roar should or could be.

From our point of view - and Ady is with me on this - we're just a couple of amateur gobshites who like to invite our mates in to spout off about the Albion - pretty much in the same way as many do in the pub, on NSC, or wherever. Our chosen medium is radio, and you're invited to tune in. Or tune out.

Now and then, we'll have a guest on who is part of the Albion, or the catering, or an ex-player, or someone from AITC. Not every Albion-related story gets out, so it's good to have a chat about their experiences or their profession. We feel it makes for something mildly entertaining and hopefully informative. We have them on basically because that's what we feel like doing.

Someone suggested that we are (or could be) an updated version of Gull's Eye. This caught us on the hop a little because this was never the intention of the show - to be a mouthpiece for the fans. It's always been a concern of mine (don't know about Ady) regarding the insistence that there should be supporters representation on the club's board of directors; how can one or two fans represent the concerns of - in this instance - 20,000 people? Similarly, we're not convinced of the argument that our radio show should take on that role. Perhaps someone could make a convincing case…?

I digress. The show has been going for about eight years, starting with Jonny, Richie, Murray and Paula (I've been involved for nearly four years, Ady for about two and a bit), and since then it has evolved into something with a self-imposed slightly wider remit. My point is - we get the occasional comment on here or in real life about the show. Mostly positive, thankfully. But the fact is, we frankly have no idea how many listen in, what people make of any given show (save the odd comment here and there), or what people think generally.

Neither of us have received any formal training as to how to present a show, and a few prep notes aside, we generally wing the whole thing for 55 minutes. We see ourselves as merely a pair of happy-clappy fans offloading our (hopefully honest) opinions.

We'd always like to see if we can improve the show, so if you'll excuse the indulgence, what is The Albion Roar to you? What do you like about it? How can it be improved? Do you care?

I'm probably opening Pandora's Box to a whole heap of grief, and we can't promise to take everything on board. We're just curious, like. Cheers.

PS - Piers Benjamin (Uncle Buck of 'Ask Uncle Buck' fame) is this week's guest. :)

I would leave it as be, it is after all in my view a show presented by fans for fans.

The dangers of any thoughts of representing supporters is you will immediately be accused of being on a power trip with your own agenda.

I actually prefer peripheral BHAFC guests / fans in the studio - peripheral is not to demean anyones status as AITC is fantastic and to hear what they do is brilliant and far more interesting than what a club official might say which clearly at times is just towing the club line. The unsung people who work for other parts of the club are far more interesting and I suspect many people have no clue what AITC or REMF etc are and the Roar is the right vehicle to broadcast what they do. The recent show with those two kids was fantastic and AITC is brilliant and has kept my eldest busy for the last 6 months.

The best ever show was with Vinicombe - outstanding.

Keep 'winging' it... far more interesting to listen to than some polished presenter sounding like a robot.

Stop picking up on each other's presenting errors. It comes over as point scoring and is unnecessary.

Listen to the match analysis on Standing on the Glebe - theirs is 20 minutes after the game so is fresher, however I think you could provide a better more insightful analysis. I suggest you make notes after the game. Sometimes it seems like you have forgotten the games - as have most of the listeners - but we want to be reminded.

And get a good introductory music for the podcast. Sussex by the Sea will do.

I enjoy the podcast and always listen. Respect to you both for doing it.

I'm very much in the keep-winging it camp although I do know that a LOT more work goes into the show than you are letting on.

Also agree with DKM about the 'presenting error' thing it does grate a little especially as the in-jokes that plagued the broadcast a couple of years ago have now gone.

For my money it is the best Albion related broadcast out there and the 'specials' with the likes of Vinnicombe, Mayo and Kuipers et al have been superb listening and stand up well to repeat listens.

I wouldn't change the 'editorial stance' of the show at all. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Keep up the good work.

I'll admit I am biased as I occasionally appear on the show when the guest barrel has to be scraped, but it is always fun to do, and I do look forward to hearing it every week.

I was also going to mention Standing on the Glebe. Despite it obviously being all about Peterborough its always on my podcast list. The advantage they have is that it doesn't go out on radio so they can swear and be a bit more loose but the way they do their show is very listenable.

I like the show, it's fine as far as I'm concerned, well done guys. I can't listen to it on the radio, so I catch the podcast every week. The only suggestion
I have is maybe the sound quality could be better but that's not a complaint.

Whenever I've been on the show, I've always assumed that the audience is going to be so small as to ensure that there will be no consequences if anyone in the studio expresses an opinion, however outrageous, about anything - we've therefore been free to babble on however we like. Whether this makes for interesting listening is for others to judge.

It's always interesting to hear from proper guests with something to say about the Club, but, in my opinion, it would be a mistake to try to turn the show into a mainstream outlet for "real" information. I'm one of those people who think the Club should be saying something publicly about the IFO report. But The Roar isn't the right place. And I doubt if an interrogation by Ady and/or Al would achieve the sort of "official statement" that this particular issue warrants.

I love the Roar, the mix of guests is always a pleasant surprise, and being an exile it is great to get the opinions of fellow fans, as well as those 'professionally' connected with the Albion. The recent one with the Boy Martin Perry was very insightful, so I say, it ain't broke, no need to fix it.

My only (very slight) gripe is that the Cannon and Ball knockabout stuff can grate a bit.

I think it's fine as it is but agree that some of the banter between you two gets a bit irritating. The show hangs on its guests of course and the recent ones with Martin Perry and the AITC guys have been great.

I'm also glad that there has been no more describing the pies as "nom-nom".

It's great as it is and reflects your personalities. It should not become a "Watchdog" for championing what ever the latest cause célèbre is as it is unlikely to be something that will reflect the majority of fans.

Having said that I think you have handled the more serious matters that are in the general interest of fans well, for example catering and transport issues when Richard Hebberd was on. As I recall there was some talk about sitting/standing/conduct as well but I might be wrong.

I think the overall matter of fan's behaviour, stewarding and the scope for a difference between the expectations of the club and fans is one I would be interested to hear debated. It would be interesting to hear how the club feel the first season has gone in terms of the "Amex experience". I also think that there are some aspects of the IFO report that do raise some questions about the process and it would be good to hear a response from the club. There is nothing to be gained by dwelling on the specific case but I think you guys could conduct a balanced discussion with no problems. I've met and spoken with Richard Hebberd many times and, based on my experiences, I could easily see him being prepared to answer questions along the lines of "are there any processes that the Club has changed in the light of the IFO report" if the was no hidden agenda behind it.

Anyways - it's always a pleasure to listen to the show!

Fine as it is.

Take the Darwinian approach and let it evolve naturally without forcing anything and then what happens, happens, and will be right

For those of us away from home it's nice to get a fans perspective on how the game was, so match analysis is most important.
It's nice to get a feel on the game as much as possible, including atmosphere.
Do not try to become a mouthpiece for fans grievances, that will end in tears. (Obviously if another Archer scenario were to happen, then that's different!)

My fave shows have been the ones with ex players, such as FDM & Kerry Mayo.

Maybe I don't look hard enough but I would like to listen to the show on the go, on my iPhone, no messing about ... Can I currently do this? Is Albion Roar on iTunes?

Also, get it out there on Twitter more - I see you only have 303 followers. Personally I use Twitter for most of my Albion news these days. Not sure about other people.

We also got a lot of attention from being on the NewsNow aggrigator; let me know if you want us to post a link every week via our website (sorry, I don't know how to get on NewsNow, we just appeared on there one day).

Any way we can help, let us know.
