That's amazing. Is it right to assume, then, that in that season we got relegated, we were one of the highest paying clubs in Division 1?

Correct. I talked to Micky Thomas a few months ago and he said that he signed for us from Everton because we paid so much more.

Bloody Hell. So we have had our tilt at buying success and failed miserably, although 4 years in Div 1 for us was a success I guess. I watched the Alan Mullery talk and he was saying about having to get rid of Graham Moseley as he was costing 30k a year or something like that. I did not bat an eyelid at that figure listening now, but comparing that figure to now, it shows how things have snowballed in a relatively short space of time.

Edit. So we were paying more than Forest were for Trevor Francis, the first million pound player! Good god.

Loads of players from that era have noted that the Albion were in the top 3 payers of all British clubs. Mike Bamber's vision really was shit or bust. Unfortunately, when it started to go wrong it led ultimately to Archer and Hereford. The perfect storm of Murdoch wanting to drive Sky into UK homes and the stumbling, bumbling break away Premiership who started with good intentions but ultimately have become driven by greed, has brought us to a point where a club with 27,000 attendances and a will to follow good financial discipline (irrespective of FFP) loses anywhere between £8 & **** knows how many millions a year. Football below the Prem is ****ed.

The stewarding levels were set as a condition of the initial health and safety licence being granted.

As a result of the Amex being such a pleasant environment, and the lack of trouble at the stadium, those stewarding levels can be reduced.

However it won't significantly impact upon the accounts. Even if 50 stewards, at a gross cost of £12 an hour, working a six hour shift, are made redundant, it's an annual saving of £90,000, or 0.6% of last season's losses.

If you are saying that ticket sales do not significantly affect the profitability of the club, then what is the answer? Do we offload all our supposed high wage earners and risk the competitive nature of the team A la Pompey? Or does the club bite the bullet and up ST prices to match the amount people pay in a match day, say £35 per match, and put up prices for other parts of the ground.
Maybe look at saying to 1901ers..." Sorry we underpriced your premium seats, they are now £100 a seat with your bars etc subsidised" or scrap the 1901 club in total and make the seats £75 each

Or, instead of having bloom as sole investor, open the board up to additional investment as happens at loads of clubs and then it's not just him dipping in his pocket. What happened to all those directors who kept albion going at withdean....the FBS type people who were on the board...that insurance chap. Do I take it when bloom took over he removed them all and they are just common or garden fans now?

We need to bring in more sponsorship really I think.

Stand sponsorships, training ground naming rights, partnership deals to promote specific services to fans.

All very difficult to arrange of course, but I'm sure Paul Barber must be on the case.

Then later Barry Lloyd was brought in to offload the high earners and he was about as popular as Barber and Burke.

How about all the season ticket holders get together and throw say another £735 each into the ring?

That should do it.

If we make ( fictional figure ) 1 pound per pint sold, then just get everyone to drink an extra 30 pints each at every home match.

Read this this morning. I think in time, people's ire towards Gus will dissipate. I think it's quite clear Gus knew this was coming, knew that belt's would be tightened and for an ambitious manager, therefore, Brighton was no longer the place for him. I absolutely 100% support the club in having to change our attitude and consider our financial limitations but the fact is we are no longer the club we were. TB cannot help us out anymore and we have to stand on our own two feet. That means having to limit our expectations in line with that.

Gus couldnt do that so he went. It seems Oscar can work within that.

I'm sure I remember TB saying some time ago that he would build and pay for the infrastructure, but the club had to be self-sufficient. It's the only sensible way, but how many years will it take to get to that situation ? (And so much is dependent on the authorities successfully introducing FFP as the first step).

Let's not bring Gus into this.

I wouldn't be surprised if Gus had no appreciation of money. All he wanted to do was say "I want that Tony. I want it. Get it for me Tony. If you love me you'll get it for me!!!" Followed by stamping of feet.

That's what I think PB has done with the new kit makers. People can moan and groan about particular brands, but I don't think anybody should moan if they are going to pay us money for it. I might be wrong on the kit makers? but that is what I thought he said some months back.

I'm also glad we know where we stand money wise, and I am also glad the club are not going to be stupid and are putting the infrustructure in place before anything else. Take for example the new training ground. We are perfectly placed to attract youth players from clubs like Arsenal, Chelsea with our new facility. These are type of players who will never get a game for these clubs, but at least with us there is that possibility and we might discover some quality players. I will also add that the location will also help. We are not that far from London really, our modern facilities could be the difference between them joining us or heading up north.

I'm doing the best I can to get to the bottom of the numbers, but until they appear at Companies House am quasi-blind.

For 2011-12 ticketing income at the Amex was £7.87 million, and TV income was £5.69 million. i'm expecting those figures to be about £10.4 million and £4.8 million (the latter as confirmed by the Argus) respectively.

If we compare the Albion to a club such as Bolton, who to their credit put the full accounts on their website, they had ticketing income of only £3.76 million last season (which is about right if you think of their attendances) but their TV income, as a result of parachute payments, was £19 million, and remember that is BEFORE the new TV deal came into being in the PL.

The gap between the Premier League and the Championship is ever widening, and that is creating the problem, as effectively club chairmen see that promotion will bring in £90 million.

Put it this way, if you could buy a lottery ticket, and it had a 1 in 8 (i.e. 3 in 24) chance of brining you potentially £90 million a YEAR, how much would you be willing to pay for the ticket?

We are just to lucky to have TB in charge though, because he is never going to lose interest or make the type of threats you get at clubs such as Cardiff, Hull, Hearts, Pompey etc.
