I have supported Brighton & Hove Albion since 1970 & now take my three children to occasional games at both Withdean & away. As a teenager I would walk to & from the Goldstone ground from Portslade; this was the easiest way of getting to the match other than by bus or train; there being no car parking at the ground.

I am therefore somewhat surprised as to the comments from both Rev Rob Esdalle and Angela Rowland (Letters, October 5), particularly as in both cases their arguments are confused and appear to show an ignorance of the issues nor do they appear to be aware as to the location of the new Falmer Stadium.

I note Rev Eskdalle wrote to you last week also commenting about the infrastructure but he still seems to have insufficient knowledge about this, conveniently ignoring the fact that the new Falmer Stadium will be adjacent to an existing railway station. I find this oversight rather incongruous given that the Reverend's address is Station Approach, Falmer!

His figure of 22,000 fans and their vehicles, appears rather misleading particularly as I know the majority of fans certainly from Lewes, Brighton, the coastal strip west to Worthing & beyond & the mainline to London will be able to use the excellant rail facilities. Currently when attending matches at Withdean I and many thousands use the existing park & ride facilities and I can assure him that most vehicles contain families and certainly not just a sole driver. With the access to the railway station at Falmer, future park & ride and carparking available at the University (at times when this facility may be under used) the infrastructure at Falmer is excellent. Coupled with the fact that spectators from Coldean, Bevendean, Moulsecombe can walk or cycle to avoid the congestion, I would be interested to know from Rev Esdalle where the infrastructure will fail to cope.

Turning to the letter from Angela Rowland; whilst living in Adur District I was not given the opportunity to vote on this issue, I can only think that she is fairly new to the area. For her information the referendum was held in May 1999 alongside local council elections for the local council, of which all Brighton & Hove residents were able to vote of which I believe over 56,000 voters were in favour of a stadium for Brighton & Hove Albion, with 45,000 in favour of the stadium located in Falmer adjacent to two Universities, the A27 trunk road & main railway line.

Whilst this was a large proportion of voter turn out I know that in this day & age such turn out is generally low, my recollection was that this referendum saw an increase of voter turn out encouraged by the importance of this issue.

Finally and it would seem that your correspondent living in Hove is firmly of the view that the stadium should not be built but much needed housing in it's place. Like the new Falmer stadium any building will be privately funded and I don't see why she thinks that Brighton and Hove City Council, will ultimately pay for this. Indeed any such non sports development of this site, will involve a much higher dependence on social and transport infrastructure and what do people prefer, a state of the art sports facility to benefit the whole community or another housing estate, superstore, industrial units or even what about an incinerator.

I know if I was living in Falmer what would be the most attractive to me; roll on John Prescott's decision.

Yours faithfully

You stupid f***ing bitch

Exactly, she must be a new resident because THERE WAS a vote and Brighton's public overwhelmingly voted in favour by 83% back in 1998. She's forgotten because it's gone on for so long!!
Somebody who can be arsed please write to the Argus and correct the silly cow.....

"Those who didn't want a stadium were not even given a chance to vote on this ludicrous plan to build a stadium," writes Angela Rowland (Letters, 5 October).

So the days I spent walking round Brighton and Hove handing out referendum leaflets to all and sundry were designed to LIMIT the turn-out, were they Ms Rowland?

A number of people I canvassed back in May 1999 did indeed express a desire to vote 'NO' in the election. And they did exactly that.

This is not Zimbabwe, Ms Rowland. Please get your facts right before spouting such spurious rubbish.

As far as having two ha'pennies to rub together, does she not realise that we have moved onto a modern system and ha'pennies are no longer in circulation?

How much money do we have?

The arse end of Hangleton
It's strange that she would rather have housing there but lives no where near the area. I'm sure the residents of Falmer might have other ideas !!!!

RE: Angela Rowland, Hove (October 5)

Dear Angela,
Catch 22. Although I wouldn’t call Brighton and Hove Albion a ‘tuppenny ha’penny’ team (two Championships and a Playoff final win) I do agree that we are currently struggling. However, we are struggling in the English Championship. That dear, is the second tier of English football, and the most competitive domestic league. How can we challenge the big boys of our league without more revenue? Revenue that a new stadium will help generate.

P.S We no longer use ‘ha’pennies’, but the war should be over by Christmas.

or this?

I am writing to applaud the letter of Angela Rowland, October 5.
She is quite right. The idea of building a football stadium in a muddy field, next to a railway line, two universities and a duel carriageway is simply ludicrous. Where are the transport links? Anyway, doesn’t Manchester United have a big stadium? They can play there. I’m sure it won’t be a problem if they clean up after themselves. Just don’t build it near Falmer. I know both residents and at least one of them would be rather disappointed. I also agree with ‘Brighton’ being ‘‘ha’penny’’. Those two Championships (that’s coming first isn’t it?) were BOTH flukes, and as for the play off final… well that was obviously a fix. I can’t tell you my sauce, but trust me… I hope this city NEVER has a decent footballing team, as football is for thugs and Labour voters.

Well done again, I’ve never seen such a concise and probing letter of derision!

I think this is the same woman who generated a lot of noise about her life being severly disrupted by the glare from Sussex CCs floodlights. Which incidentally, is of course, total nonsense. A friend of mine lived in one of the top flats in the Drive and they made no difference whatsoever.

She has a clinical problem with anyone enjoying themselves, and frequently writes in complaining of anything she can think of. She just enjoys the publicity of having her name in the paper as she has nothing else to do in her miserable life.

I am sure she would be far happier living under the Taliban, where enjoyment, music, sport and artistic expression is banned. Or maybe Hove is just to exciting for her. She could always move to Worthing.
