TGC'S 1983 Cup Final DVD - bloody BRILLIANT

Got mine on Saturday, cheers TGC - a top quality product. I've watched a couple of hours of the Grandstand build-up so far, and its bloody hilarious.

David Coleman is absolutely obesessed with the fact that its raining "quite hard" and that the Albion are (gulp) flying in by helicopter (shock horror). I guess back in 1983, helicopters just couldn't deal with the rain - barely 5 minutes elapses without a concerned update on the weather from dear old Coleman. We're also gravely told that there was "some really heavy lightning earlier..." HEAVY lightning eh ? Blimey.

To help pad out the 3 hours before kickoff, the Beeb are also trying out a revolutionary (for 1983) feature where they get viewers to phone in and ask to see a recording of a favourite sporting event. We'll see "the girls operating our busy switchboard" (despite there clearly being at least 2 blokes manning the phones as well, but their hairs quite long I suppose). Believe me, some of the requests get obscure. David will have a chat with someone on the phone, who says something like: "I'd like to see footage of Ann Whelker winning gold in the 3000 metre steeplechase at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics". Cue an excruciating and protracted conversation between David and the caller, while we see some bloke with an enormous video recorder (with those big whirling tape wheels) searching frantically for the requested footage. What doesn't seem to help is the fact that it appears the BBC's entire sporting archive is held on ONE BIG TAPE, so it takes feckin AGES to find anything. Finally we're rewarded with some grainy black and white footage, before its on to the next call. "Can I see the winning flick in the 1971 Tiddlywinks World Series in Dudley please David...."

You see Eric Morcombe embarrassing the hell out of Kenny Dalglish at an awards ceremony...you see Bobby Robson presenting Ian Rush with the "Young Player of the Year" award, and rambling on for 10 minutes of gushing platitudes with poor young Ians hand gripped firmly in his, and Ian just not knowing WHERE to look...you see Neil Smillie hook a tee shot horrendously into the rough (followed by Steve Gatting showing him how its done)...You see Fozzie and Grealish in a joke shop trying to laugh at some lame bits of plastic they're buying (the funniest thing being the fearsome amount of facial hair they have between them - just like a couple of Yeti's shambling about)...

Disturbingly, everyone in the squad bought a carriage clock as a gift to each other (they're from Debenhams, says a straight-faced Melia, in case we were concerned it was a cheapo from Woolies). Bob "The Cat" Bevan spins some truley awful, cringeworthy gags at a dinner. Big Ron, looking tanned and confident, when told the Albion are flying in by helicoptor, quips "Just don't let any of the irish lads tun the fan off then".

This DVD is an absolute MUST - I'll never get bored of the naffness of TV in 1983. Not even got to the football yet either.

I was shocked by just how dated it looks! Also surprised by the fact that there were large sections of Man Utd supporters in what I thought would have been the Brighton end?

I think we sent back a load of tickets didn't we.

I can remember a load of my mates were in the lower section which was filling up with Man U fans and they borrowed my ticket one by one to get into the top tier. From the footage you can also see Man U fans climbing down to the bottom tier from the top

Hmmm, I see your point Lush. Sorry, but I just got over-excited after watching most of Disc 1 over the weekend - the relentless onslaught of Pringle jumpers and hair-over-the-ears sometimes has that effect on me.

Now see what you've done EASY. You've whipped up more interest just as TGC says he's not doing any more.....

My sentiments exactly! If there is a need for another 15 or 20 then it might be worth it. But I would need to order more disks, cases and envelopes as well as printing more covers.

If someone wants to copy them and offer them, feel free as long as it is for A&K.

We didnt send tickets back. Allegedly Bamber did a deal with the Mancs and we had more seat tickets in exchange for terrace ones.
Also for many Manure fans even in those days lived nearer to us than Old T.

Contrary to Easy10, I loved snuggling down to be transported back to TV of a more innocent era. I don't remember the build-up though I must have been transfixed by it, so I just let my adult self evaporate.

I loved the beige that permeated everywhere, I even enjoyed the (now quite patronising I suppose) musings of Hill, Coleman, Icke, at al), words of people who knew far more about what was going on and who spoon-fed us morsels throughout the day.

But what has REALLY changed for the worse was the football itself. There was no diving, no looking for free kicks, no moaning at the ref. Granted, a couple of the tackles were horrendous and went unpunished (Whiteside, I hate you) though the commentators did say that they deserved yellows.

The pace of the game I thought was fast, skillful (wasn't Smillie a good player?) and I'd rather watch the DVD again than have to sit through 90 mins of your average Premiership fare with immensley wealthy players falling over at the slightest contact.

Thank you TGC for doing that. Best bit of memorabilia I've ever bought!

Don't get me wrong, I loved it as well.

It really is an absolute world away from the slick presentation and zooming graphics of Sky Sports nowadays. Its quite an eye-opener to compare TV coverage from 22 (! !) years ago to what we have now...I wouldn't say it was "amateurish", but it had a kind of awkward, stilted charm to it. A naffness that I just found hilarious. Like looking back at old pictures of yerself from the 70's, when you think "christ, did I REALLY look like that ? ?"

Top entertainment.

Yeah, I know you did.

I was expecting a slower, more hoofing, pace, but it wasn't.

I loved the pictures of the team getting on the bus with Case given that atrocious 'seagull on a hat' affair, and who was singled out as being the local pin-up lad? Graham Pearce? Stevens??

Superb

I CRACKED up at that - some shitty blue polystyrene bowler hat with a gigantic manky old stuffed seagull stapled to it - some old bloke hands it to Case as he's boarding the coach and says "here Jimmy - and give it to your daughter afterwards"...Case looked WELL impressed
:lolol: :jester:

Biscuit - no ads I'm afraid...its a recording of Grandstand on BBC1.

A mistruth through ignornace rather than maliciousness then
TGC - I've not watched that bit yet. Something else to look forward to. Ooh, I hope there's an advert for Operation, by MB Games.

"Its MY turn to operate..."
"Can I have a go ?"
