what about people that smoke, lighting a ciggie whilst driving is a distraction aswell and rolling a roll up.

In that case you're a f***ing tool.

As sully said, it's exactly the same as drink drivers, the 'it won't happen to me' attitude.

And, more to the point, if it does happen to you, it'll probably happen to some other poor bastard who happens to be sharing the road with you, you STUPID, SELFISH WANKER.

I can write a full text without looking at the screen - and so I'm confident I can write a text without diminishing my concentration on the road.

As you mature as a driver, driving becomes more instinctive. For the first couple of years, having so much as a conversation is enough to distract you from the road.

But can you select the person you're sending it to without looking too?

I'm sorry, but I don't believe that it doesn't distract you.

I'd never do it on the motorway, but on the road (especially these days) there are traffic lights/pedestrian crossings every 20 seconds to do those things that do take your eyes off the road.

That's what it's about I think, for an experienced driver - keeping your eye on the road.

I would hazard a guess that I'm a far more experienced driver than you, in fact one that's never had an accident. However I haven't had the misfortune to have shared the same road as you.

Do us all a favour, take your car up to Beachy Head, put your foot down and keep driving, a moron like you won't be missed.

Hahaha. According to your profile, you are 22. How can you possibly be a 'mature' driver? I'm 24 and would never dream of describing myself like that.

Writing text messages while driving is f***ing STUPID. As fatbadger rightly responded to my previous post, not only are you endangering yourself, you are endangering EVERYONE ELSE ON THE ROAD AT THE SAME TIME.

ffs.

How many of these people who called me a 'selfish wanker' and 'a tool' and gave me the :wanker: smilie have looked at a fit girl walking down the road or at a shop window or even at other drivers in their cars?

And I would put ALOT of money that they have ALL changed the radio station or had a conversation with someone in the back while they are driving a car.

You'd have to be a bit brain dead already to try and text whilst driving imo.

You want to compare and contrast?

You have to be momentarily distracted for roadsigns, pedestrians etc. Momentarily. If you're gawping at women or looking in shop windows while driving at any speed, you're a plank.

You can change the radio station and have a conversation without taking your eyes off the road and your hands off the wheel, and you can easily dismiss the two if you need a sudden burst of concentration.

It's physically impossible to do that if you're doing something as stupid as texting while driving, purely because your eyes are off the road, concentrating on something else.

I can't believe anyone can even consider defending it.

That doesn't make it right and it enhances your chances of having an accident that will be your fault.

However, specifically setting out to do something that distracts you is just plain stupid.

What I have learn as I've spent more time behind the wheel is that you have to try to ignore distractions, not just think you can cope with them.

Been driving for 5 years. Never had an accident. I would say it's your first year or 2 you're a vulnerable driver and after that you have the experience to avoid danger instinctively.

Don't see what I've said that's caused uproar. I maintain that as long as an experienced driver has his eyes on the road, he's safe.

I'm sure all you "2 hands on the steering wheel at all times" brigade will disagree, but I would say shit drivers are a bigger danger than those who send texts at traffic lights.

Five years ? Call that experienced ? You're a moron, why is it that all the evidence of people who clearly have far more experience (and clearly intelligence although that's not saying much) say that it's more dangerous than heavy drink driving ?

Of course I'm sure you know better than any expert but that's because you're in your own little world. Frankly who gives a f*** if you damage yourself but I doubt whether it's crossed your tiny mind what harm you could do to others.

I have to do a lot of driving for work and I don't care for it, not because of my driving (36 years and no accidents should say that I am not that bad a driver) but it's idiots like Mr V that put me off driving.

So by that statement, if your sending a text you cant stop doing it if you need to concentrate?

As ive already said, I can send a text whitout looking at the screen which means that im looking at the road!

ok say you have an accident you will be convicted of driving without due care and attention for all of the above, still if you avoid having an accident whilst being so selfish to all other human beings whilst driving then well done, you are THE MAN, but if you do have an accident hopefully it will be just yourself you destroy not innocent drivers, pedestrians and their families.

Tell me one thing, what test message is SO important it cant wait until you get out of the car

Does this mean that you dont choose to change the radio station its just something that happens?

I am amazed at some of the people on this thread.

I struggle to text and walk at the same time.
