As a Blackberry user, I send emails not texts. I am assuming this is ok as all the focus seems to be on texting.

Have to agree with TLO on this one, incredibly dangerous - probably much more so than actually speaking to someone.
I would say definitely more so, at least if you're talking you can still LOOK at the road.

As an aside, I bought a satnav recently and sometimes find that can be quite distracting. There doesn't seem to be any laws (that I've heard of) governing their use. Can you be done for programming in a destination "on the move" ?

I would suggest the "driving without due care and attention" covers that

I've not got enough hands to text whilst driving what with the hot coffee and the smoking that accompany any car journey.

The problem is the police don't seem to have a clue. CCTV should capture a lot of people but if they did then you would get the usual wingers claiming it is just a way of raising taxes. It's a bit like speeding, people moan because they get caught. Well, you have two choices, don't break the law or don't complain when you get caught.

If the police were going to try and catch people, you can bet your bottom dollar they would be standing by the side of the road in their bright yellow jackets and not surprisingly not catch anyone.

Right here, right now
Sneezing while driving should not be allowed either - the combined effect of shutting your eyes and spraying snot all over the windscreen, followed by the hunt for a tissue to clean said snot from the screen is clearly very dangerous.

Very true, I know somebody who had a serious road accident caused by a sneezing fit.

Pet wasps should also be BANNED from car journeys. Hugely distracting.

I ALWAYS text while im driving, but I wont do it when im at a roundabout or road junction or when there is any other cars near me!

It also helps that I can text without looking at the screen.

:tosser: what you can read the screen without looking at it as well

The driver of a US passenger train had been sending texts before it went through a red light and caused a crash that killed 25 people, investigators say.

Emergency workers at the scene of the collision

The train failed to brake at the stop signal and smashed into another service in Chatsworth, 30 miles north-west of Los Angeles, at the weekend.

More than 130 people were injured in the incident, the worst seen on an American railway in 15 years.

Metrolink train operator Robert Sanchez, who was killed in the crash, had been sending text messages while on duty the day of the collision, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) revealed.

However, the board did not say when Mr Sanchez sent the messages, or whether it thinks they caused the tragedy.

Local media reported that a teenage train enthusiast claims to have received a text from the engineer minutes before the collision.

The NTSB said it had spoken to two boys and their families "and they've been fully co-operative".

"They're two young teenage boys who love trains, apparently rode the train and knew the engineer," said Kitty Higgins, a member of the NTSB.

"And there's some issue about whether they were texting with him, and that's what we're trying to track down."

Sending texts while driving a train is a violation of operator Metrolink's policy but not illegal.

California's top rail safety regulator says he will now seek an emergency order banning train operators from using their phones while on duty.

I've been know to send a text while sitting at the train crossing that i pass twice daily but other than that i use the built in hands free I had installed and TALK to REAL people.

I agree with what someone else said as well. It's often the people who drive a lot who don't have proper hands free devices and there really is no excuse. I reckon since talking on mobiles was banned (although very badly enforced) more people my age are texting cos they think it's more difficult to spot.

For those who don't already have one my bluetooth kit cost £99 fitted and will work with any Bluetooth enabled mobile phone through the cars speaker system, cutting off the CD player when making and receiving calls and using the phones built in voice dialling.

You can actually buy the kit for about £50 now if you're happy to fit it yourself.

Without doubt one of the best hundred notes i've ever spent.

WELL DON'T

If there's anything you learn today, let it be that what you are doing is bloody dangerous.

And your excuse that you can do it without getting distracted is much the same as most people who drive over the legal alcohol limit thinking it doesn't affect their ability to drive. You're wrong.
