Brighton
Not everyone does think they should be doing better, because xbox tells them something else apparently. I might be being over generous but I am loathed to criticise a Brighton midfield that has played almost every side off the park in the top flight of English football, including clubs like Spurs and Man United. We have a limited budget, the defence is doing OK, the midfield has been superb, and he has changed the keeper (albeit a few months late). It's harsh to blame the midfield, really very harsh. They keep creating the chances for the forwards, who just don't score. It might be the difference between Championship keepers and Premier league keepers that Maupay is up against.

But how much further up the table would we be if the midfielders mentioned had scored the sitters they've missed over the season. Off the top of my head think Lallana v Palace, Macallister v Villa (I think), Trossard v Utd and others, Ali J v Sheff Utd - all golden chances and I'm sure there are loads more. Almost certainly that then eases the pressure and the strikers will score more too. Again, I don't think anyone is letting the strikers off the hook - you are right that they are the ones who are primarily paid to score the goals.

Care to link a single post on NSC in the last couple of months that says that we don’t need better strikers?

There are plenty that suggest stamping your feet and spitting your dummy out doesn’t make a signing more likely though

I’ll grant you that a few are blaming Potter for our strikers not being up to scratch though, your new found mate being one of them

Their latest ‘theory’ is that our midfielders are the big problem. This is incorrect.

a large majority on here want a better striker tho'; do see what i mean, it doesn't make sense?

The point I am making is SOME think the problem lies elsewhere. It doesn’t.

With all of these psychological problems we must be top of the list for 'big chances missed': https://www.premierleague.com/stats/top/clubs/big_chance_missed?se=363 , or our strikers must be: https://www.premierleague.com/stats/top/players/big_chance_missed

Apparently not. Maupay in 15th, Welbeck 22nd, Connolly 29th, Trossard 40th. Team in seventh. Our strikers miss as many decent chances as their peers do.

Our issue is the quality of chances. You can get a high Xg from either creating a good number of good chances, or a huge number of poor quality chances. In the last few games we did the latter. Our average number of shots per game was 12 over the season up until mid February. This went up by 66% or more in the last three games. Yes we should have scored one of the three golden chances against WBA, but on the whole we were hitting shots through packed penalty areas because our patient build up against teams playing a low block always means that we are doing our midfield passing in big spaces and our finishing in very small spaces.

We haven't got a Zola type striker who can make space for himself, but we are playing against defensive teams in a way that would suggest we have. Its the equivalent of putting loads of high crosses into the box if we did have Zola. We have strikers who are happiest playing with the ball in front of them, turning and outpacing or holding off defenders, but we can't play in the way that gives them these opportunities if teams sit back. If we are going to continue playing this way, we need to be signing a special teams sub who excels at working in tight spaces in the box. United had the same weakness against the low block and signed Cavani. What's Javier Hernandez's up to these days?

Good post! 👍👍

Plenty of posters who seem incapable of coherent thoughts

my guess is that the majority of albion fans have been wanting a murray replacement for years, which is your view, yes?

I have been waiting for a Danny Wilson replacement since around 1986 and now we have not only got one but even upgraded (I know, burn me for heresy) with Bissouma. Only problem is, we also have found our like for like swaps for Richard Tiltman and Mark Farrington. That's the Albion for you.

Bit unfair on Tilts (better than Saunders TM Barry Lloyd) and the goal machine that is Farrington
