I think there comes a point when the parenting role moves subtley to the background ............. you start to treat them as lodgers somehow. And sometimes they are right. The world has changed since you were going through your teens.

Apart from the fashion obviously.

Just get a bit impatient with all these adults telling me what to do. What school does you son go to btw?
That was my main issue when I was that age. He's bordering on adulthood and wants to be treated like an adult and be able to make his own decisions, it's a fine balance between letting him choose his own path in life and you steering him in the right direction. If he feels too smothered then he will probably lash out verbally. The best thing you can do is give him the illusion of being in control , whilst offering the advice he needs. You'll probably find that when faced with a choice rather than a direct order, he'll make the one that you wanted anyway. If my parents had thought like that then we might get on a bit better now.

Just be grateful you can understand him, most of them just seem to grunt at that age

Yep that as well, he even said "no" recently when I was going to make up the numbers for his U15s training match - that's how uncool I am now

Oh and another point he seems to live in perpetual darkness when at home as his curtains are always drawn - why ?

Gloom is an absolutely essential part of being a teenager though. Especially if your parents are unrewarding enough to be tolerant and understanding.

I was lucky. Very little grief came my way when my sons were teenagers. But then there's only 18 months age difference between them and they spent their time deliberately getting on each other's nerves!
