Team v Crewe?

Adams has said the squad strengthening is more or less over and we'll only sign one more player, maybe. I still think we look short of a creative midfielder and another goalscorer. As far as I can see, the only debate is who will play in central defence otherwise the team looks like it picks itself.

My side to face Crewe would be:

Kuipers

Whing
Elphick
Virgo
Richards

Cox
Thompson
Livermore
MacLeod

Forster
Murray

Subs:

El Abd
Hawkins
Loft
Robinson
Gatting or Dixon?

With Forster & McLeod pushing out wide. If not, just the standard 4-4-2 with the same bunch of players.

Maybe Lynch on the bench but presumably Virgo will start as will one of either Elphick or Hawkins so do you have two centre-backs on the bench? Surely not. You might be right about Sullivan though. Back-up strikers look weak to me.

Wouldnt be surprised if we still through Virgo up top if needs be. Lynch should definately be in the squad. Centre back partnership is basically Elphick and then 1 of 3.

Absolutely no need for more than one speciallist centre back on the bench. El Abd will be on the bench and offer good cover there. Lynch is good as offers cover at CB and LB. Virgo also multiple positions. That's what you need from your bench, surely - good cover from 2 or 3 solid players [depending on whether you have a keeper] then 2 impact players, to run at tiring defences, Robinson, and ....

We do seem to have a much stronger set of subs this season...

After all, we might have:

Lynch
Virgo
Robinson
Gargan
El-Abd

As subs - very versatile and lots of potential.

I know Virgs can play up front but for me we need another striker on the bench. I'd expect one of Gatting, Dixon or Hart to be one there for the Crewe game.

Actually, thinking about it more, if we have Virgo on the bench (Central Defender / Striker) we don't need Lynch. So could have a 2nd striker - as you say.

Are we allowed more subs this year?

I think Sneaky might have it about right. One of the four centre halfs will have to miss out completely and I would think it would not be either of the new signings and deifinately not Elphick so unfortunately Lynch will appear to be the one.

Unless Adams has other plans for Virgo (Central midfield in place of Thompson?)

I think one thing is clear, Micky is going to have a real challenge keeping our 5 centre backs happy thoughout the season (although 3 of them may well crop up in other positions as well).

I can't believe that Virgo would have signed to sit on the bench. He must have been more or less promised first team football so I fully expect him to start. When he signed, he said Adams wanted him to play primarily in central defence and occasionally in different positions, eg, up front.
I think he'll start at Crewe.
