It's discussion, FFS. There is a pretty universal view that we need to play Trossard from the start (possibly Mooy too) - so somebody (or somebodies) are going to have to step down from midfield. So who? Stephens? Propper? Gross? - I don't know - it's a problem Potter is going to have to solve and get right - but with the midfield options we now have, someone is going to lose their place - and Gross is one possibility. One of several.

Calm down. I don’t agree that in many cases it is a discussion, it has been a relentless agenda for months going way back to last season, people who for some reason don’t get it or choose not to get how invaluable Gross is to the team.

You clearly aren’t one of them so I agree Trossard needs to come back in, I would leave Connolly out personally although maybe re-jig and drop Alzate. Both will get plenty of games so I don’t think it does any harm.

Mooy needs to be on bench, he had his place and lost it now he needs to win it back. Back to my original post once he starts scoring and assisting like Gross then we can consider him to replace him in the starting line up.

It looked like we went more three at the back after they went 2-1 up? Actually I am not sure when it was but that was when i noticed. At the substitutions? Hard to tell on the TV.

3-4-3/ 3-4-2-1 or whatever you want to call it seems to suit us better than the 4-2-2-2 thing.

After that performance though Trossard has to start

I am finding Propper less and less convincing

........................ Ryan ....................

..... Webster .... Dunk .... Burn .....

March .....................................Alzate

......... Stephens .... Mooy .........

..... Gross .................. Trossard.....

................... Maupay .....................

I'd swap March and Alzate over.
March and Trossard working together earlier in the season was a great combination.

I'd prefer Bernardo at LB to Burn or Bong but he's a few weeks away? So this.

........................ Ryan ....................

Webster ......Duffy ....... Dunk ....... Bong

Mooy.... Stephens .... Pröpper .....Trossard

..... Connolly.................. Maupay.....

I wonder if krul’s knee injury will keep him out? I wouldn’t mind McGovern being in for another 5-0 pumping

I doubt that as he saved 2 penalties today from Rashford and Martial.

My team would be:

Ryan
Webster....Duffy....Dunk
Alzate...Stephens.....Propper...Mooy/March
Gross
Maupay....Trossard

Burn is no left back So Bernardo or Bong in
Mooy in for Propper
Trossard in for Gross or Connelly

My thought processes on selection

Full back is our weakest position, with Burn trying manfully out of position and Montoya struggling for form = return to 3-4-3
Someone is going to be seriously unlucky to be dropped to accomodate Trossard. I've gone for Gross (with a heavy heart). My rationale is pace and the fact that Mooy and Trossard are both good set piece takers as well
Two strikers is working really well, so i'm loathe to break this up.
Can;t drop Alzate again. What message does it send?
Trossard to be told to buzz around and get on the ball wherever he likes.

-----------------Ryan
-----Webster Dunk Burn
March Stephens Mooy Alzate
---------------Trossard
----------Connolly Maupay

Button Montoya Duffy Propper Bissouma Gross Murray

What a bench

Potter doesn't look for a settled side. He looks for a team to exploit what he sees as opposition weakness and counter their strengths. Form matters I guess, but format is more critical. He'll pick a team based on the opposition. In which case, god knows what he'll do.

However, you have to think we'll play Trossard from the start whoever we're playing.

So many leaving out Connolly. Did he not ‘create’ both of the goals we scored on Saturday, when he was on the pitch?

His pace and movement causes a lot of trouble for defenders, forces them to sit deeper, and this creates the space for the likes of Trossard and Groß to enjoy themselves.

I'm certainly not in favour of shoehorning Trossard in at LWB

To be fair though it is a conundrum. How to get our attacking fab 4 (Connolly, Maupay, Gross and Trossard ... sorry Mooy) into the team. But I think 4-2-2-2 is the only way

Can we not have posts criticising others for leaving out an attacking player who is on form and playing well.

Someone who seriously deserves to play in an attacking position is going to sit out and in the end this is going to be a highly marginal call, most likely made on the basis on the relative qualities or weaknesses of the opposition rather than what they've been doing for us.

I expect to see Mooy and Trossard on the bench if Maupay and Connolly are fit. I do not see this idea of dropping Connolly. Together they are a handful for a defence but on their own much less effective.

We are at home to Norwich.

I'm only saying that IF Potter wants to start Trossard, my guess is it would be instead of one striker, and I'd see that as being Connolly.

I'm not saying that's what I'd do...

That's only based on two of Trossard's three starts have seen us line up with only one out-and-out striker. The caveat is that against Southampton, where Trossard started, we also had both Maupay and Andone in the side. If Potter views Norwich similarly to Southampton - a shithouse team we should be beating - perhaps he'd go for a similar approach - Trossard AND Maupay AND Connolly.
