That's great.
We're talking about his defending.
“But apart from that what did the Romans do for us”.

You might be talking about his defending, I’m talking about his complete contribution, and the title of the thread is just “Tariq Lamptey” not “How crap is Tariq Lamptey as a defender”.

I think he really shines as a wing back. Can see him rotating in with Minteh should we stick with a back 3 into next season.

Hope he can stay fit and signs a new contract. Then I will touch massive wood too.

Maybe so, but Veltman is the only RB from those 3. Ferdi is a LB and Hinsh is a midfielder, as a result I expect him to be in competition with Veltman as the only other specialist RB (unless we sign one in the summer).

That said, Lamptey has been the best LB in the squad this season. Pervis has been inconsistent and hasn't supported Mitoma anywhere near as much as he can and Ferdi is probably the long term option but he's still returning from injury.

I'd say worst case, next season he's 2nd choice RB and 3rd choice LB but for this season he's easily my 1st choice LB
He's improving & excellent going forward but under pressure defensively, he worries the crap put of me

I would say he is:
A good RWB. A good RW. A decent LWB and LW. What he’s not is a top full back, but even there he has enough as cover. If he’s fit he surely has a place in the squad.
I tend to agree. Either way though, he's well worth taking that option of a second year

Agree with most of that. He absolutely has a place in the squad.
But he's nowhere near good enough to be 2nd in line at RB

Ok.
As part of his contribution, he's often terrible at defending. Which he was signed for

If we can find a right back who can defend brilliantly for 90 minutes, isn't he probably getting in instead of Veltman?
Yes, he may well do. That said, the one thing we desperately need if Veltman drops out of the squad is some "game management" skills. It's sorely lacking when you have a combination of Veltman, Welbeck, Dunk and Webster out of the side (which will happen more and more, you'd think)

Maybe he wasn’t signed only as a defender. This is what Potter said when he was signed: “With his pace and technical ability, Tariq provides us with another option on the right side of the pitch both at right-back, where we already have good competition, and also further up the pitch."

The game everyone talks about our lack of game management was Wolves at home. Where Veltman seemed to spend the last 20 minutes trying to win soft free kicks from a ref who wasn't having any of it.
I like Veltman a lot but I wouldn't say game management or decision making is a strength

Nope.
As Joel's calmness, top level experience, intensity & genius level shithousery affect the defence & therefore team fundamentally.
This imaginary RB sounds like a decent understudy though

Ok.
He's currently playing at the back though, so defending can be important

His LB role worked ok last weekend with Webster guiding him. Where he's been best for us is around the opposition box - really good crossing, two tidy feet, sees a pass. I bet he'd be a lethal CF!

He's been one of the real positives this season, his pace seems back, certainly his recovery pace in defence, he's stronger, tougher and seems real confident. And some nice goals and assists. A player that will scare the opposition. He should be a regular from here on
Considering he’s had substantially less support when playing out of position at LB than our supposedly more rounded, better defensive RB has had, I think he’s doing a fantastic job. If he’d had Minteh in front of him on Friday, rather than Mitoma, I suspect he’d have looked brilliant defensively.

Saying that, I could’ve played RB on Friday with Minteh in front of me, such was his shift in front of Veltman (and yes, I’m joking).

my only gripe with Tariq is he keeps reverting mid match to the role he played under Potter where he was free to nip down the wing into the oppos area. This is leaving us exposed at the back because our formation cant really cope with his absence.
