Anyone else taken to the briny waters off the Sussex coast yet? I went in for a lengthy dip by the Metropole on Saturday and the water was as clear as I can ever remember seeing it. And yes, I got in far too quickly, thereby causing the tide to come in.

Saturday after the England debacle - it was fantastic. Cyled with daughter along DownsLink - lovely balmy evening, then is for a swim. The water was warm and clear. And yep - as clear as I can remember. Then again we cycled yesterday - this time en famille and we had a post swim bbq and drink. It was like being on holiday.

The tide is perfect for evening swims for the next few nights.

LOCAL SEWAGE TREATMENT

Portobello outfall at Peacehaven - The sewage of Brighton, Hove, and Peacehaven (nearly 300 000 people) is discharged after screening through a 1.8km long sea outfall. This is the equivalent of 31 Olympic swimming pools per day. The screening mashes the effluent up but does not remove bacteria and viruses which make people ill. Each 100ml of effluent which is discharged contains about 10 million faecal coliform (bacteria found in human sewage). Southern Water intend to put in primary treatment - less than the normal requirement for secondary treatment.

Shoreham sewage treatment plant - Preliminary and chemically assisted primary treatment discharged through a 3.1km outfall. The sewage contains about 1 million faecal coliform per 100ml of water.

Brighton SAS campaign for tertiary (UV or microfiltration) treatment, the number of faecal coliform per 100ml falls to 10 faecal coliform - one million times lower than is currently going into the sea. To put this in perspective, a beach which passes the UK's minimum tests can have 2000 faecal coliform per 100 ml.

Brighton and Hove Stormwater Project - this is not a form of sewage treatment. It is a holding tank to prevent sewage and rainwater overflowing from the sewers onto the beach through short outfalls. The scheme has cost at least ú40m and is 3 years late. When operating (in time for the 1998 summer season) it will mean that sewage will be pumped to Portobello where it will be discharged with only preliminary treatment.

Aldrington Basin Stormwater Project - like the Brighton and Hove Stormwater Project, this will stop sewage and rainwater overflowing from the sewers onto the beach. Sewage will be taken to Shoreham sewage treatment works.

Preliminary treatment (screening) - removal of grit, grease and sewage related debris like condoms and sanitary towels using mesh screens.

Primary treatment - separation of sewage sludge from liquid. The sludge can be spread on farmland, provided it does not contain high levels of heavy metals.

Secondary treatment - reduces the oxygen demand of sewage and the amount of bacteria.

Tertiary treatment - kills bacteria and viruses. Usually done by ultra violet (uv) or microfiltration.

Yes but Caveman - if you want to be put off - you can be. Same with swimming pools. But a swim in the sea is envigorating. You have to be sensible though - and there are times I don't fancy it. But not often.

We regularly go down on a Friday night - have a swim and a bag of chips on the beach. A simple pleasure.

Sorry, not trying to put anyone off, infact I'll be going in tonight hopefully myself. I go surfing all year round and the water then is filthy. You'll be alright as long as you dont swim around with your mouth open.

I just wish the water was this clear all year round.

By then its too late to go down to the sea.....nice in our back garden on the decking though

The sea in Denmark was a balmy 20 degrees yesterday - clear and with a reasonable wave height (courtesy of Man of Harveys).
Topless blondes and ice cream, all after a trip to the World Cup in Hamburg for the Italy Ukraine game. Life is shit.
