Well they're certainly not always going to get it right. But they should learn and it's use should improve.

I certainly like the way that play just carries on, unless the team back at base have spotted something important. Not challenges from either team, no new time wasting.

When the ref does get called to look at something, does he see what we're shown? Because the best angle to show Sweden's penalty was shown to us after the ref had already changed the decision.

Clattenburg sticking the boot in on ITV. Like he didn't make mistakes. On first run it looks like the defender gets the 1st touch. Evra then chips in saying the ref should do better.

Even when VAR works perfectly they still moan

Nah they're right. Far to many referees aren't making decisions and relying on VAR. Bottling it because they know they can go up, and like they said what if South Korea went up the other end and scored? A referee at any professional level should be getting that right on the spot, and surely better to give it and THEN review it then be scared, let the game go on and risk further incident.

That said I don't agree with Clattenburg saying that VAR shouldn't only be used for clear / obvious problems the other day. Surprised no-one picked him up on it

The opposite became true in cricket whereby it gave the Umpires more confidence to give LBW decisions that weren't on middle stump. I'm guessing in time the same will happen in football as refs will get bolder. We shall see. Harsh in this instance I feel - I thought the defender got their first initially and i'm guessing it wouldn't be totally clear from the angle the ref was at.

My annoyance is mainly with Evra. He wouldn't dare slag off a French player for missing an open goal or one of his mates at club level for an errant pass. Ref makes a mistake though and its lump on. Clattenburg is almost as bad. If you went for a pint with him, I bet he'd talk about his himself until your ears bled.

It's all VAR too much for me.

The referee on the pitch's decision should be final. Not some oiks 200 miles away, secretly watching Pornhub when there's a break in play. This one was right but the French one was wrong. Why the minute's delay in the referee's ear before the call? South Korea were on a promising break. Feel a bit sorry for them as they put a lot of energy into that game even if Sweden created the better chances.

I mentioned something similar in another thread.

He's said a few strange things. Today they were going on about the ref making the decision to stop play when SK were on the attack, rather than stopping play straight away. But surely the ref stopped play as soon as he got told he needed to review the incident. He can't just take it upon himself to double check if he thinks he's got it wrong - it has to be indicated to him that he may have made a clear and obvious error, which will take 10-15 seconds.

This is an important point. The referee cannot ASK for a review. He will make his decision as normal, and will only hear from the the VAR if in their opinion he's dropped a bollock.

What would have happened if South Korea had scored before the ref had heard from the VAR reviewers? Would their goal have stood? Would it be put on hold while the ref reviews the screen pitch side and only allowed if he disagrees with the VAR reviewers? If he agrees with the reviewers, is the SK goal scrubbed as the VAR 'offence' took place before they scored and, if a pen, play would have restarted with either a goal kick or kick off, depending on the outcome of the pen?

Can you tell the plums on TV that?

You'd think they'd know it inside-out wouldn't you. But listening to some of the co-commentators in particular, they only seem to have a vague knowledge of how its supposed to work.

I was predicting that VAR would be a shambles, and we might still get some. But I have to say, so far its worked well. The delays have been minimal, and I don't think there's been an out-and-out HOWLER yet. The one clear failure so far IMO was when that Argentinian was tripped in the box at the byline but the ref gave nothing. It was as clear a pen as you could get, and yet it wasn't even reviewed. That was odd, and had it have been England, I'd have been climbing the walls.

If he decided on review that it was a pen, then the goal would have been scrubbed, and the penalty awarded.

If he decided on review that his original decision was correct (ie no pen), then the goal would have stood. If it had gone out for a throw,a goal kick, whatever, the game just restarts from that point as normal. Thats my understanding.
