[Cricket] ***Sussex v Kent - match thread***

Here's a challenge for you: pick a team of players who were in a England test team and who were born in Sussex. It's possible to pick a proper team, with regular openers, opening bowlers, keeper and spinners. There are at least 14 players who qualify, maybe a couple more (I haven't checked all birthplaces yet). It's not in the mists of time either, I've seen eight of the 14 play

I did dig out two openers by going through people on the Sussex top scorers list who I either hadn't heard of or couldn't remember anything about, but decided it would be more in the spirit of the challenge to leave that to other people.

I'm also going to highlight that a whole 2 (two) of that 11 were born in Newhaven.

I didn't have Quaife in my original list. There are also two more players who took part in the first ever test match, making 19 Sussex-born players who have won England caps.

In the XI I selected, two of the top three in the batting order didn't play for Sussex (one's still playing so he could yet!). My other opener was the oldest living England test player when he died quite recently.

Your team is very similar to the one I picked (I didn't have Fred Tate though)

EDIT: It is very hard to find batters though, as pointed out earlier Sussex have had plenty of decent bowlers over the years but batsmen are in short supply. We've had a handful over the years (Ranji, Fry, Duleep, Sheppard, Dexter, Greig and Goodwin all spring to mind) but none of them were Sussex born

Yes. John Snow took PE at Woodingdean, don't know if he took any other subjects though.

In those days, your class teacher took you for all subjects, Snow was our year teacher for 5 months.

I missed one - there were three Sussex born in the first ever test team, so there have been 20 Sussex born players (there could be more, I've only looked at Sussex players but there could have been more who have played for other counties.

I was going to pick Arthur Gilligan over Fred Tate, but his Wikipedia and Cricinfo pages have him down as being born in London. Hopefully Fred and Maurice can cope with the temporal shenanigans needed for them to play together.

I think it's a general problem, that batsman are just unreliable and flighty as a breed, prone to wasting the hard work of the bowlers .

I remember John Snow taking me for PE a few times but he wasn't my teacher. What years were you at Woodingdean. I was infants and juniors from 61-67. John Snow must have been at Woodingdean around 63-64.

Indeed.

I'd liked to have picked his brother but, amazingly, John was never picked for England - he's widely recognised as one of the best batsmen never to be capped.

I interviewed John L for The Cricketer back in the day. He was a lovely bloke, I thought I'd get about 30 or 40 minutes of his time but we spent over an hour - such a modest guy, full of good stories.

So you are 1 year older than me. Mr Haslam was my last year teacher as well. A few years back there was a presentation to Mr Haslam from some of his pupils he taught for reaching a certain milestone in years (can't remember how many). Found out through Friends reunited after the event (so that's going back a few years)

The school seemed to have forgot to take our team photo the next year, even after we won a couple of games with high scores. Doh! Sorry don't recognise anybody from that year. Mr Haggard, Headmaster on the right. Good with the cane he was, I was luckly to escape from.

Why? It's all available free on line - well Sussex is, and very decent coverage it is too.
