I am currently on a gap year but will soon have to decide whether to go to Sussex or Exeter.

How good is Sussex Uni? Has it got a good reputation i.e look good on the reference for future career paths.

Exeter I think is a slightly better Uni but I'd love to be back in Brighton watching the Albion week in week out.

Given the choice, where would you go?

Oh and I'm taking Economics if that helps?

For what it's worth ... the Department of Economics at Sussex University was ranked equal 3rd of 50 Departments in Britain on overall satisfaction in the 2008 National Student Survey.

What about Southampton? Down the road, great economics deparment and a brilliant Uni. Plus an away game on your doorstep!

Between Exeter and Sussex, I'd choose Exeter. At the end of the day it's ranked as a better uni and to employers that's what matters.

bit worrying a propective Economics student asks NSC. however, i can tell you that Exeter is bit of a small city and the uni is full of "Ra's" (posh knobs).

I went to Exeter and loved it. Sussex is also an excellent university though, and you'll have a great time wherever you go.

I went to Sussex and loved it, did Computer Science thou.

I think to be fair most employers wouldn't have much of a clue how much better one uni was over the other past the big ones and crappy institute ones.

I wish, when I chose my University that somebody told me to look at the league tables.

The bottom line is, the higher up the league tables the Uni is, the better the reputation (and hence the better your CV will look with an award from that particular institution).

This is not actually the case; university league tables are completely flawed, and they also fluctuate terribly each year. Just because one university is higher than another in a particular table does not mean that it has a better reputation, but they are useful in that they can give a general picture. Decisions shouldn't be based on league tables alone, further research is needed.

A good friend has recently graduated from Sussex reading Economics and walked straight into a very good job. Highly thought of and you'll do well there if you put the work in. :)

Hum I see your point and I agree (working in the University sector myself) that the tables are fundamentally flawed. They will always place the research intensive Universities near the top and the modern Universities at the bottom. However, with the benefit of Hindsight I regret choosing a modern University over a top 50 Uni.

I studied at Sussex, and had a great time (more for living in Brighton than the Uni itself), but I think that Exeter has a better reputation overall (although I do not quite know on what basis), and might therefore look better on your CV in 3 year's time when applying for jobs.

Many league tables rank universities mainly for their research output, but some produce tons of (rather pointless, except for hitting Govt targets and attracting funding) research at the expense of teaching, so be careful.

As has been noted above, Exeter does seem to attract a lot of snooty students; like Bath, Bristol and Durham, lots of Oxbridge rejects with a chip on their shoulder -allegedly! Obnoxious, arrogant, twats.

One word for you FALMER. Sussex is now an excellent University and rises up the league tables each year. But imagine being able to walk over the road for matches, awesome! Sod Exeter.

Spent a year in Exeter and I have to say that, compared to Brighton, it was dull as f***.

Exeter is smaller than Brighton but that works both ways really. On the one hand, no, it's not quite as lively but on the other in your second and third years all your mates will be within about five minutes' walk and the uni not much further than that. Nightlife-wise there is enough, as I repeatedly say I had a brilliant time there and don't regret going there for one moment.

There are quite a lot of public school twats, but they are avoidable and actually provide quite good comedy from a distance. And academically Exeter probably does have a slight edge on Sussex but go to whichever you prefer when you visit, at the end of the day if you put the work in you will get an excellent degree whichever you go to.

I'm torn between these two and Birmingham at which one to go to. Can't decide.

I completely agree with all this, I went to glamorgan uni which is situated in a small town outside cardiff. All friends were close and and the whole uni being on 1 campus made a big difference.

I dont know either uni at all, but would suggest that the one which is based entirely in one position and not scattered around the town with halls of residence on-campus would get my vote!

Exeter does have a better reputation that Sussex but I wouldn't say it was far better.

Sussex still has a reputation as being a very solid University though.

For me, the university's best quality is the way the staff really seem to care about the students, something you won't get at the larger universities. Exeter is quite small too though I believe so it may have a similar atmosphere to Sussex in that sense.

And as has already been mentioned, it's nice to be able to watch Falmer progress right over the road.
