Up your alley
I did economics as minor subject at Sussex in 70s. One of tutors was Julian Le Grand, now professor at LSE and Nu-labour advisor. Bit of a pinko then, don't know if there all as left-wing now. We had tutorials then - not sure if they still have them, given increase in student numbers.

I'm at Exeter at the moment and I'm having a great time, but thats what the majority of all students say whichever uni they went to. It came 9th in the latest league table and a lot of money is being spent to improve the uni, including a £40million project on the centre of campus (forum project, look it up). however this work starts this summer i do believe and will be going on for a couple of years and will cause some major disruption to the centre of campus, including the library,so its worth bearing in mind! apart from that the campus is beautiful, a lot of new fancy accomodation and not forgetting exeter are in our league next season.

I am currently on a gap year but will soon have to decide whether to go to Sussex or Exeter.

How good is Sussex Uni? Has it got a good reputation i.e look good on the reference for future career paths.

Exeter I think is a slightly better Uni but I'd love to be back in Brighton watching the Albion week in week out.

Given the choice, where would you go?

Oh and I'm taking Economics if that helps?

Just finished economics at sussex last week. It is now a top 20 university and the econs department is very good. I got two work placements with a "top 5 big company" during my degree and have got several job opportunities lined up with big financial firms. Not many jobs will discriminate against universities and if they do it may well just be a 'only apply if you went to a top 20 uni' which Sussex is.

Just to echo One True BHA about job opportunities, I have got a summer placement this summer.

I agree that if you're hard working, then that will be much more beneficial than where you went to university.

I am going to be doing Maths with Economics, possibly at Sussex. Anyone know what Sussex is like for that?

Personally, I've never understood the attraction with staying in Brighton. As good a Uni as Sussex is, I can't understand why people would want to stay. I went off to Portsmouth to experience a different city (cue smart-arse "Portsmouth is a shithole" comments). From a life experience point of view, I strongly recommend moving away and experiencing somewhere new. For me, this is more important than maybe getting a better degree if you stayed.

I've heard lots of people say how much they like being in and around Brighton. Especially of late with the nice weather

I saw the plans for that, it looks scary. What subject are you doing there? And what halls are/were you in?

And that just proves how flawed league tables are. They can produce completely different outcomes depending on the criteria which is used to produce them.

In the Times uni table that came out last week Exeter are ranked 9th in the UK and Sussex 35th.

In the economics specific league table Exeter are ranked 6th and Sussex 29th.

I fail to see how describing portsmouth as a shit-hole can be described as smart-arsed! I'd like to add southampton to the shit hole list, however. Even Nottingham where I studied was very, very rough... Good night life though. I'd say if you do really want to experience something different, go to the midlands/north.

The Times one does seem to be particularly harsh on Sussex though. In the other 5 I've seen (Guardian, Independent, Sunday Times, World rankings and one other, i think it's just called 'good uni guide' or something) Sussex has ranked around the 20 mark in all.

I completely agree though that they are very flawed. I chose Sussex over seemingly much higher rated unis because I loved it here and wanted to do the course. It's a big mistake to make a decision based on league tables.

Both are excellent universities and good cities to spend three years in. An employer is not going to recruit someone on the basis of going to Sussex vs Exeter. It's more about you, how well you've done in your exams, work experience etc. Exeter is a nice place, but it is quite small. It has nice countryside around it and is good fo outdoor sports. But there is a hell of a lot more to do in Brighton, Sussex and the South East. Being in touching distance of London is handy too - especially for going out. But I do see the appeal of going somewhere else for a different experience.

Has to be the LSE. Did my degree there.

Three Tuns on a Friday night then Crush, great!

You'll have access to not just the LSE facilities, but also the University of London, and ULU up in Bloomsbury.

Concerning some members on here, it may not be the best Uni to goto if you are a BNP supporter.
