[News] "Support Gay Marriage" Cake Row

It's very fashionable to support gay marriage, but there are billions of people in the world that don't. Catholics, Muslims and a lot of C of E, are against gay marriage.

I think it should be remembered that people are entitled to their views, and shouldn't be told they are outdated.

Even though they clearly are.

The views of the KKK are still entrenched in parts of Southern USA, but that doesn't mean they represent the best thinking of the time.

I also agree with the ruling and the sentiment on here so far.

If a straight supporter of the cause had asked them to produce that cake, they would have been refused too. The bakers’ problem was with the message, not the sexual orientation of the person ordering it.

You've just proved my point.

In what way?

Those views are based upon collections of stories and anecdotes written down over two thousand years ago and probably more like three-five thousand years ago.
I'd love to hear an argument informing why the views of people from thousands of views ago is not outdated in 2018.

My take is that while I strongly disagree with the social considerations of the bakery, one shouldn't have to be forced to write or create something which goes against those principles.

For me, the Supreme Court has got it right.

Correct.

I also agree with the ruling. It seems fair enough.

This bit annoys me:

"The original decision to turn down his order had left him feeling like a “second-class citizen”, he said."

Really? It's a cake FFS. I think most people would just be a bit pissed off for a few minutes, and then find another bakery which can provide them what they want.

Other questions about the case should be-
Who is paying the bakers expenses?
Was the whole thing a set up?

Latest figures from the BBC

Questions will now be asked as to whether the Equality Commission was right to spend more than £250,000 of public money on this case.
DUP Ian Paisley MP said he has written to the Northern Ireland Secretary calling for a review of the organisation's funding.

The commission backed Mr Lee, who ordered the "gay cake" but was refused.

Four years later, the Supreme Court has ruled it was not a case of discrimination.

Ashers bakery has spent more £200,000 on the case. It is being paid by The Christian Institute, a charity and lobby group.

The cake at the centre of the dispute would have cost £36.50.

It has proved to be the most expensive cake order in UK history.

Just for balance- there are plenty of non religious people who don’t agree with gay marriage as well

You've just said those views are outdated.

What makes a view right or wrong, or indeed out of date?

You clearly support gay marriage, but many don't.

Usually because the doctrine of same-sex marriage is forbidden from a time when rules were written and laid down thousands of years ago, and many societies - mostly for evidence-free reasons - adhered to them.

When the evidence came back of how immaterial marrying someone of your own sex was, opposition, dating back those thousands of years, fell away.

What is does - to an extent - is clarify the law.

For instance, the law is still clear - as it doesn't apply here - on banning people from an establishment or refusing them service on grounds of sexuality, race, gender etc.

Exactly. The bakery hasn't discriminated against Mr Lee, and have made other cakes for him.
The Equalities Commission wasted £250K of public money in fighting it.

Everyone seems to be in agreement. Basically this is a case of not being able to force your beliefs on others, which is correct.

On balance the court got it right, but then again I'm not sure anyone was forcing their beliefs on any one else.

The problem now is that would still be illegal for the bakers to refuse to make a cake for a gay wedding, but leaves a very grey area as to what they able legally obliged to write on it :)

This is a really tricky one, but I think they got it right. The ultimate concept for this decision, is that the bakery took issue with the message, not the individual. Should the have refused to serve the man in question, that would be discrimination, but just like a Socialist baker may not want to make a cake that says 'vote tory', the bakery here is within it's rights to refuse. Should it have been a wedding cake for two men, I wonder what their reaction would've been....

There's probably still people that believe in slavery or that gay people should be castrated or something - They are wrong though. There's nothing wrong with holding an opinion, just don't expect to be given a platform, or not to be called a ****.
