Sub-standard comedy

Charlie Sheen - two & a half men???

If thats the one your talking about then I don't mind it. It's not laugh a minute but there are usually some saucy birds in it!!!

I liked Friends and also "Cheers" for the first few series but as you say, their comedy doesn't come close to ours.

If you want saucy birds, watch porn

They wouldn't be allowed to. It would be deemed way too politically incorrect. Same with Dad's Army.

The PC brigade have played a massive part in the downward slide of British comedy.

Don't agree with that. Ricky Gervais is VERY-unPC, but he does it in a clever way. He made David Brent a twat by being so PC.

Not sure about that. Partridge was wholly un PC and very funny.

Well, I don't know too much about Partridge as I only watched a couple of episodes and didn't really like it, but remember this was probably written 10 years ago. I think things have changed since then a bit.

Cant say much about "The Office" either, only watched 1 episode and it was utter toilet so never went back. Maybe I was just unlucky with that episode.

Also I hear that to understand "The Office" you have to work in an office - at that point I hadn't ever worked in an office.

The political correctness thing wasn't my words it was brought up by a guy on the Dads Army appreciation show last Sunday but I think there is a lot of truth in it on the whole.

I just think you have differant taste in comedy than some of us is all. All the stuff you hate I love and vice versa.

Agreed - I watched Live at the Apollo last night. Dee is solid, the fat Peter Kay wanabee bloke was shite, and Russell Howard (who's usually good on Mock the Week) was pretty average really. There's some good stand up's at the Apollo that have been on Dave the last couple of days, Lee Mack sticks out. But generally, most of them are crap.

As for sitcoms - well they're all AWFUL when you compare to Blackadder and similar classics. Only the panel shows seem to be worth a watch at the moment, which is a sad state of affairs really.

Programmes I watch:

Mock the week
QI
Have I got news for you
Never mind the Buzzcocks
8 out of 10 cats

Quite depressing really, there really is a lack of laughs out there.

Still, can always bung on the Blackadder box set....

Thank goodness-I was beginning to think I was alone in finding Ricky Gervais and his brand of humour complete and utter crap. Watched one episode of The Office, well half an episode. Tried Extras and it lasted less than half the episode. For my personal tastes, Gervais is about as funny as Tabasco Sauce on the end of my knob. (Yes-I know what that feels like-never get a bj from a woman who had Tabasco on her Taco is all I will say)

Peep Show, the IT Crowd, The Mighty Boosh.

All recent TOP British comedy ranging from the gentle to the outrageous.

However, most of the stuff on mainstream channels has been completely wank. Still trotting out My Family, Dibley and all that shit. Oh my days.

Extras is dire. It's not so much the comedy as the premise itself. Who in the name of the sweet baby Jesus would find watching the life of a jobbing actor funny? The IT crowd however was hilarious. The exciting world of IT was crying out for a humorous look at this fascinating and essential profession.

My Family is always going to polarise opinions. I guess that if you don't have children or understand at all what it means to live within a nuclear family unit then you're not really qualified to comment.

Couldn't agree more Mr Nibble. I think part of the problem is Radio 4 not commissioning many new shows for their 6.30 slot which used to lead to some great TV comedy, League of Gentlemen, Mighty Boosh etc etc. I can't think of a current comedy show that I would set my alarm for like I would in the past.

Count Arthur Strong's Radio Show.

Currently being aired again on proper R4, Weds, 6.30pm

There is also the listen again feature on BBC iplayer thingy. Shows stay up for a week after broadcast.

I'm not sure that's true. I don't know what it's like to live in the eras that Blackadder was set but can still find it funny. I have never worked in IT but found the IT crowd funny etc.

My god, that is awful. Only slightly better than My Family.

Well I like it a lot and like Charlie Sheen very much but then again I am a cheap and shallow person so its no suprise really.

Only quality about at the moment comes from the US, I'm afraid.

Arrested Development, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Family Guy, The Office - An American workplace.

US Office is at least as good as the original if not better, 4 series so far and all the characters have developed wonderfully, its not just centred on the Brent (Michael Scott in this one) character.

This lot show a level of intelligence and bravery of subject matter sadly missing from British comedy at present (Peep Show apart).
