The Jimenez one? I don't like that it's a red. Mistakes happen, players can be clumsy, you can make a physical foul without being malicious. That's what yellow cards are for - 'be more careful'.

I far more hate the snidey tackles where the player deliberately leaves a foot in to hurt his opponent after winning the ball, or when players get rough early in a match 'to put a marker down', as Clinton Morrison put it on radio 5 on Friday, as he bemoaned the introduction of VAR making it harder to do that.

Those are more worthy of reds than what Jimenez did, as bad at that one looked. I am a firm believer in that intent to hurt an opponent should be the guiding principle, regardless of the current wording of the law.

What happened with Jimenez was he got elbowed about 5 minutes earlier by a different player, which was completely missed. It wasn’t a particularly bad elbow, but he felt aggrieved and lost his temper. You see it so much in football in all levels, he got all het up and wanted to “give some back”.

I personally think it was red, because it was extremely late, he had no intention of getting anywhere near the ball and just wanted a bit of revenge. The foul itself wasn’t horrendous (he pulled his leg away so it wasn’t studs up) - but IMHO all that did was change it was change the decision from Violent Conduct to Serious Foul Play.

I’d expect a red for that personally.

Because 'we' are now all pre-programmed to believe the referees are incapable of making a correct decision.

If our ref walks out today and is overheard saying 'what a nice day for football', 60k people at The Emirates will all scream 'it's f##king night you bellend'.

Even at the opposite end of the pitch as we all were everyone around immediately knew it was a straight red challenge and there wasn't even tooooo much fuss when it was initially a yellow because people were saying it'd go red with VAR. The fact it was so obvious to us blimmin miles away makes it seem like the ref didn't have the courage to give a red without having a 2nd look - he can't have missed it in real time surely. Shambles.

12 minutes in and refs are often reluctant. I think they doubt themselves. Especially in front of a home crowd.

With VAR there they can hide and let them issue the verdict. It is lack of courage. But I also think it's human nature.

Indeed it isn't the severity of injury that's the basis of the punishment but the maliciousness or recklessness of the action that is being punished.

Incredibly in interview on Sky after match Sheff Utd player Ahmedhodzic said he thought it wasn't even a foul!!!! Claimed it was a really good tackle.

I wouldn’t put it past Wilder, he’s increasingly desperate.

And yes, a further deterrent to thuggery by anyone.

Will the decision be finalised before Saturday?
With Palinha already banned, i think that's our last game with that level of thuggery expected.
