That's a really interesting question that probably deserves its own thread. The term is used interchangeably because people of a progressive view are confused so it's no surprise that those on the right can't understand. I would say the reason is that there are very few actual left wingers anymore. The Left used to fight globalization and it advocated on behalf of the industrial working class and the disadvantaged. Now, people who call themselves left wing have embraced middle class, liberal causes and if they reference working people at all it is to insult their intelligence. I actually can't remember the last left wing post I have read on NSC. Just a constant battle between right wingers and Liberals, the latter of whom think they are left wing.
The consequence of this is that working class people and the disadvantaged do not have a party to support and so
gravitate to right wing parties such as UKIP who at least talk about their concerns. I think that is desparately sad but inevitable as the liberals want globalization for ideological reasons and the corporations like the profits it brings. This unholy alliance is driving inequality and will continue to do so all the while the politics of middle class, liberal, student activism is the only
offering on what used to be the Left of British politics.

The same type of parents twenty or thirty years ago would have just shut them in the back of a car and occasionally passed them a bag of crisps and bottle of coke. Technology changes and evolves but there are still good parents and bad parents and always will be.

It's not just children in thrall to these devices either. My Mrs can spend an hour at a time on her smartphone gassing about all kinds of shit to her friends or playing Candy Crush. And look at me, up early on a Sunday morning and choosing to be on a laptop debating instead of cleaning the house or going for a run or whatever.

I'm not a massive fan of social media. Facebook, in particular, seems to be used to dumb down every debate going. It's full of lies and moronic angry mobs on both sides of the political divide. However, in my job (I work in IT) and my spare time (I write a blog and for an Albion magazine) I have to use social media to promote myself, my company and my team. It's a necessary evil that no one's going to uninvent.

Back to the point. The Daily Mail has a right to exist and print what it likes within the law. Its sponsors have a right to withdraw if they don't like it. Simple as that. Someone will take Lego's place and Lego will sell more toys to parents who are ostensibly against rampant capitalism, based on this action. Irony all round.

Obviously The Guardian would get mentioned in this thread. This is the same Guardian that Arron Banks (I can't find a Daily Mail piece he's written in) features in occasionally and that he called the most balanced newspaper in terms of it's Brexit coverage.

I've never ever read the paper but what a brilliant way to harden all those views in one foul swoop. It has already weakened Labour in my opinion. I agree it is perhaps not directly related to the Daily Mail issue but one could say that this is another example of an issue of interest to the chattering class liberals but not to the type of people for whom the Labour Party was formed. Scotland is a good example of the decline of Labour. There used to be strong links between the northern and Scottish cities through trade unions and a shared political platform. Now the Scots vote for a nationalist party and against London centric liberal politics masquerading as Left wing. The next step may be a UKIP take over
of the north of England and the liberals will likely react with more insults aimed at working class people and
more attacks on their newspapers. A better response would be to embrace and represent the concerns of left wing voters instead of ignoring them.

On another note,what of the Liberal party in all this-100 years ago before Labour existed....they were a major force,could they be again or have they already, only masquerading as Labour?

i propose those 17 million DM readers tell advertisers at the guardian to stop right now because they dont like the guardian opinion. hopefully all the advertisers will stop and the guardian will go bust. People power will have won
