Is the reason that Gerrard gets moved around the midfield more than say Lampard simply because he is more versatile. I still firmly believe Gerrard is THE best English player and although we shouldn't necissarily alter the way we play to accomodate him, he has to play and in my opinion should've been given the armband ahead of Terry.

No one player HAS TO PLAY. If Gerrard cannot adapt to Capello's way of playing, he doesn't play. It is that simple. This is basic football tactics, come on.

no, but it would be beneficial for england if capello were to accommodate him. he is, quite simply, our best player.

NO IT f***ing WOULDN'T.

Sorry to 'shout' but we've been trying to accomodate all our 'best' players in the team for years and it hasn't worked. Time to attempt to pick the best TEAM not the best players.

Not really.

Capello does not need to accomodate anyone. It's his team, and I trust him more than anyone on this board when it comes to managing football at the top level. He knows better than us. He really does.

Spain won Euro 2008 without Raul, and largely Fabregas. We still have the wrong mindset.

The team should be picked depending on who is needed for THAT specific game. Certain games I would rather Gerrard and Hargreaves, certain other games would suit Lampard and Barry much better. I can see Beckham definitely doing a job coming on with 20 minutes left if we are struggling against certain teams.

Gerrard has only played in his preferred postion for England a handful of times, that has to be important. His issue is that he can play in many positions, so he ends up playing out of his favourite position.

He's a central midfielder, he's played their countless times

He has played in central midfield plenty of times in his 8-10 odd years for England. When he says "preferred" I'm pretty sure means with the team built around him, to allow him total freedom to roam etc. Admittedly with Barry it does seem to work fairly well. But it's not the case that he has GOT TO PLAY.

My personal opinion is you look at your squad and your best players and then pick a system that suits them. Then the players have to play to the system. If they are top players they should be able to adapt.

So for example I would have a midfield 3;

Hargreaves
Gerrard Lampard

We know Lampard can play in a 3, he does it for Chelsea. Hargreaves has proved he is an excellent holding player. The problem is Gerrard. He needs to be told the system and that if he doesn't stick to it he is out of the side.

How do we accomodate Cole and Rooney with that midfield three though? Surely we have to stick with the 4-4-2 formation that rolled the Croats over?

Don't forget Walcott. And Carrick. And Barry.

We clearly have the players for a good International team. Capello will bring out the right set of players with the right attitude.

I see where you are coming from Chappers. I'm unsure whether a 33 or 42 is best for the squad we have. Still, my point stands that if Gerrard is picked next to Lampard even in a 442 he will have to fit into the system and not go roaming off.

5 out of 60 odd starts I believe

Pick the best partnerships in central midfield, central defence and up front and we are good to go. It may not necessarily mean pick the best players.

Partnerships we know that work well for example:

Woodgate/Ferdinand

Barry/Gerrard
Hargreaves/Barry
Heskey/Owen

Crouch/Owen

These partenerships are not the "best" players, but they compliment each other, and do so whilst playing for England, so why not give them a go??

We then get 2 pacy people down the wings and we will be a good team.
