Thought Gus didn't sign Bergkamp. Wasn't it someone else who "resigned shortly after?

Yeah also had the understanding that it was not Gus who signed Roland, that was reason behind the guy from Watford resigning or being forced too.

Hopefully, there's a few Ali Dia's in there...

To be honest though, it must be very rare for a manager to see a player live before signing nowadays (unless they are in the opposing team or a highly televised league).

I'm sure there are plenty of players signed on the recommendation of chief scouts / recruitment specialists etc etc. I imagine that a lot of managers are busy managing their own footbal club when scouted players are playing. Makes it difficult to see live.

What is VITAL though, is that the manager has the faith that the scout is 100% in tune with the profile of player needed. I think Gus has that now and thus can rely to an extent that he is getting what he wants (unlike allegedly when Stephenson was in role). It doesn't seem like Kean and anyone at Blackburn are on the same page at all regarding transfers...

We'll have to wait and see though.

I haven't seen Messi live but if he was offered I'd sign him.

I don't think this is unusual at all, especially as so many games are covered now. You could easily build a good DVD of a player together with scouting reports from people you trust. Just seems like another chance to have a go at the poor man.

1) Kean watched video of the players and consented to them being signed and everything is being blown out of proportion because of who owns Blackburn and they way they have acted

Or

2) Kean didn't consent to the signings and either Shabby Singh will be out of a job, or Kean has accepted he doesn't have total authority over transfers and accepts the situation as it means he has a job.

Isn't this what that chap from Watford that left would have done for us?

Gus couldn't watch the majority of people we scout so he relies on others to keep him informed.

Kean not watching them 'live' wouldn't be a major concern. As has been mentioned this is normal in many cases dealing with international transfers. But he says "Shebby Singh was very excited about them coming here and was telling me how good they were."

Doesn't that suggest he knows very little about the players and possibly hasn't even seen much video footage?

Managers often sign player's these days without having seen them play live, by simply going on the recommendation of a Scout or even worse, by a few minutes of edited DVD which is well risky .

Certainly not the first time this has happened. Punts on unknown players can seriously bite a manager in the arse. The funniest & probably the most famous one, being Ali Dia at Southampton who managed to con Souness that he was the Brother of George Weah. Couldn't have happened to a nicer club or Manager - Well, perhaps Pompey or Palace would have been funnier. When Redknapp was at West Ham, he signed a striker called Marco Bougers who he had never seen play. He signed him on the recommendation of an agent. He turned out to be a complete turkey who made the likes of Tiltman & Farrington look like World class strikers. Redknapp paid £1 Mil for this guy! After leaving West Ham, he was last heard of, living on a Travellers site somewhere in Holland!

Its fine if you have a professional Scouting setup that the Manager has complete faith in. Do I trust Gus and the current Albion setup to make good judgements in the transfer market & not take a chance on Carlos Kickaball from Venezuela or Lord Prince Scoralotaloti from Equatorial Guinea? Absolutely I do.

However: If I were a Blackburn Fan, would I trust Kean & his 'recommendations'? No chance! Kean hasn't the ability to run a bath let alone a professional football team. Likewise, the owners and their flunkeys. Blackburn have thrown everything at getting Promotion at the first attempt. If it fails, they could be in serious financial shit.

From the BBC

Blackburn Rovers manager Steve Kean has admitted he has not seen any of his three deadline day signings play live. Kean told BBC Radio Lancashire that Grzegorz Sandomierski, Nuno Henrique and Diogo Rosado were all recommended by global advisor Shebby Singh. "They're in the club now and we can have a real look at them," said Kean. "I've not seen them play live. Shebby Singh was very excited about them coming here and was telling me how good they were."

This guy is/was a pundit for the prem in South East Asia, and if his scouting skills are anything like his punditry skills it will be a long, long season for Blackburn. People out here still can't believe Singh has a serious job at an actual professional football team in the UK :lolol:

Different case here from most though anyway isn't it. Who honestly believes Steve Kean has much say in Blackburn's transfer dealings?

Just seems like another chance to have a go at the poor man.

The poor man promoted way beyond his skillset and installed as Venky's stooge, someone who would not make any waves when his best players were sold from under him...The poor man who saw nothing odd in awarding a 2 year deal to Jerome Anderson's 20 year old son Myles. Jerome Anderson just so happens to be Steve Keanes agent, and also just so happens to be employed as an advisor to the Venkys. Myles Anderson, at 20, has played a total of 2 minutes competitive football (for Aberdeen) in his entire career.

More than meets the eye going on at Ewood if you ask me.

That's an odd response.

I guess he wanted the last word?

You're 100% right by the way. Gus does watch football constantly. Not always live but he has been known to watch League Two Spanish football followed by League One Italian etc etc, he lives it. :legend:

Here's one for you. We enquired about a teenager at a Premier League club who is nowhere near their First Team squad. Dougie didn't even think he was good enough anyway, but we asked and were told that he earns £1.8 million per year and they were looking at a sizeable contribution towards that.
Still working on others but rest assured that we'd rather sign nobody than pay stupid money that our club can't afford

Seems Palace try to foist players on their manager, too, though apparently don't have the money to do so.

Yep. Recall him stating with incredulity how current players don't watch televised football (think he was referring to a La Liga game he was enthusing about at training to many blank looks amongst the playing staff.) Each to their own though innit, also recall BZ saying how he doesn't watch much in the way of TV football.

I would suggest that if Brighton were to sign someone for EIGHT MILLION POUNDS, Gus would have watched that player. Maybe not for a young development player like Bergkamp.

I watched the first DVD of the Withdean years last night, and Booker mentions that Adams never saw Zamora before signing him on loan. He was apparently very surprised how skinny Zamora was.

So there are situations where a manager wouldn't watch a signing, but for £8m I'm pretty sure most managers would look at a player first.
