Or secure his services for longer as our own player - something he evidently wants?

True, we won't be able to match the salary he would get from the last year of his Wolves contract but if we offer him a longer deal that might clinch it.

Chief Executive Jez Moxey has revealed ‘tentative’ talks with the agents of eight players due back from loans have begun.
Margreitter joins Stephen Ward (Brighton), Roger Johnson (West Ham), Razak Boukari (Sochaux), Tongo Doumbia (Valenciennes) and Kevin Foley (Blackpool) in that category.
“Tentative discussions have taken place with them or their representatives and that will become more intense over the summer,” Moxey said.
“They all have contracts and if we can’t find a solution for them, we have to honour those contracts. We think every single one of them wants to move on but I’m not going to let them go unless it’s right for us.
“First of all, someone has got to want them,”

Story in the local paper today:

Express and Star: Stephen Ward issues plea for permanent switch away from Wolves

“Whatever happens will be done in the summer,” said Ward.

“I’m hopeful it’s not going to be my last game at the Amex for Brighton.

“It’s difficult. I’m contracted so there are a lot of negotiations and talks to go on behind the scenes that will not even involve me.

“I will leave that all to the powers that be in the summer.

“But I don’t have one negative word to say about this place and how this year has gone for me.

“It’s been a fantastic move for me, a real breath of fresh air in my career.”

Talk about journalistic licence with that headline, as someone in the comments section underneath the article points out.

If we keep our back 4, sign a GK, creative midfielder, a striker and a covering player, I think we'll have another good season. Sign him up!

At £15k/week and using the 2012/13 BHA accounts, you'd have 0.4% of the permanent staff (ie 1/239) being paid something like 4.3% of the total wage bill for the entire club.

The figure I have heard is £18k/week. I doubt we're paying anywhere near all of that.

I think the reported £15k/week is wrong and he's on more than that.

I'd be surprised also: people seem to forget he was with them in their Premier League phase.

The problem for Ward is that there is no chance of getting the wage he has been used to ,on this contract, with us.

No, which means he either looks for a club which is prepared to pay him that- I'm not sure he'll get one at his age- or he recognises that perhaps he might need to reassess his priorities.

I'm not saying he won't: while hardly on the poverty line, Wayne Bridge must have taken a huge cut to play for Reading last season (from, what, £90k per week to a horrifying £25-£30k :lolol:). It does happen, sometimes a gut feeling about a club & going somewhere you're wanted is more important than money.

Well let's hope he doesn't do a Mattock and sign for someone like Wednesday :lolol:

In an article last August, the Argus stated that he was on "reportedly £13k a week" at Molineux.

He will still be on the contract he had when Wolves were in the prem, the same problem they had with shifting Kevin Doyle who was on in excess of £50k a week. Not saying Ward is on that but I'd guess it's upwards of £30k a week and with a year left on his contract, Wolves may well take a nominal fee of something like £75k but as decent a bloke as I am sure Ward is, he still has to look after number 1. If we offered him TK''s wage, that might just secure the deal if it was at three year deal.

Hopefully FFP will push the wages in the downward direction

Ward won't get a PL club, he'll have to drop wages wherever he goes from Wolverhampton. If he's so desperate to come back he'll take the pay cut.
