You can choose to 'interpret' things however you like. 'In line with' is a fairly simple concept to understand for most people.

I believe it is somewhat vague, and perfectly 'in line with' most of the communications you will be receiving from Mr Barber in the future.

Tell me what you 'understand' it to mean. I certainly know what Gus 'understood it to mean'.

It means 'broadly the same as last year'.

Gus took it to mean 'broadly the same as last year'.

Gus wanted more. He was never going to get it.

Here is a direct quote from Mr Barber: 'Our investment in our player budget will be in line with last season. However, Financial Fair Play (FFP) is one challenge facing us that simply won't go away. With it comes the need to drive our revenues as hard as possible and to keep our overall operating costs at a minimum in order to ensure we remain competitive on the field. I'm sure many of you may well be fed up with hearing and reading about it. I can make no apology for reinforcing this message, as it is an essential one to ensure our continued progress as a club. It is also something that Tony and the board have made an absolute priority for all of us. This season is the first with the new rules firmly in place, and our aim at all times must be to operate within the guidelines.'

When you speak of 'agendas', it is quite clear that his vague statement 'in line with last year' can be interpreted a number of ways. My interpretation is that it's certainly not going to increase, which given inevitable inflationary factors actually reflects a cut. And the 90% of the paragraph dedicated to the 'challenge' of FFP and the need to 'drive our revenues' whilst 'limiting operating costs' IMO broadly falls in line with my post. Perhaps those with a differing view have an agenda of their own?

So..."in line with" means "lower". Right. Silly me, all this time I thought "in line with" meant..."in line with". Cor, I feel like a right idiot now! Thanks!

And what does 'broadly the same as last year' mean?

To any normal person with a grasp of English vernacular, it means similar to last year, maybe a bit more, maybe a bit less, but no significant difference.

To you it seems to mean that our playing budget has been cut in half.

Yes, a major dent into the £160m and 9m recurring. HUZZAH!

That's a stupid argument. Much like Liverpool fans proclaiming that they 'didn't overspend' on £35m Andy Carroll, because they had loads to spend at the time.

A bad deal is a bad deal, regardless.

And what does 'broadly the same as last year' mean?

So Brighton have brought someone in to ensure the club complies with FFP and that's a bad thing? Only a supporter of a club which went into administration twice in a decade could make that argument.

Just leave your name and address and I'll send you a nice new dictionary. And when you're not reading it you can use it to prop open the door of your caravan to let the smell out.

There are new sponsorship and partnership deals being announced shortly which replace those which were set at League 1 levels and have now expired. The former CEO , Ken Brown was sacked for his profligate spending during our inaugural season at The Amex. Paul Barber was brought in to turn things around , the caterers were booted out after failing to improve and a new tender process will see the club benefit from higher commissions. Making 18 middle management positions redundant because there were too many Chiefs and not enough Indians saves the club just under £1M in salaries a year. Keeping the playing budget the same as last season means will we will fall within the FFP guidelines and do things the right and proper way and leave a clear conscience , a concept which is alien to Palace fans.

HAHA YES THE JOKE SURE IS ON PALACE!!!!

Did you lot forget they are looking forward to a season in the premier league, Mourinho, Manchester Utd and city, Chelsea home and away etc etc and we're gearing up for Bournemouth Barnsley and Yeovil?

I'm 99% certain they couldn't give a flying fukc.

Not at all. Our club is now being run correctly, and in line with FFP regulations. More so than with your own club, I might add. Crystal Palace fans had no power over the mistakes of Jordan and Goldberg, but having seen them a first hand makes your somewhat glib statement at the end of your post redundant. If anything, it makes them better placed to see the impending meltdown at your club. Still, we'll see if you grab a couple of £3m strikers here and a few £1m wingers there, and dish out Vicente style contracts. Somehow, I doubt it.

How much was Vicente on seeing as you obviously know?

I'm certain that there are a fair few of them who aren't best pleased that not only have they freed up the wages for one of their rival's bench warmers and highest earners, but that they have also given us £850k for the pleasure.

He would have been on about 15k a week. Based on that, I make it that Palace have freed up an extra £1.6m for next year's budget. Thanks Palace.
