Has there ever been a good Greek striker ?

Scorer of the winning goal in the Euro 2004 final - very handy player on his day.

I think about this a lot when we sign players like this and said the same when we signed Enciso.
For these players to contribute at this level let alone improve us they’d need to essentially be the best player their country has produced.
So you have the lottery of it working out with a player this age plus the historic odds against them.

Good players can have been born anywhere though right? It's not strictly necessary they are from Brazil or France

Not sure whether or not this will be behind a paywall, but Scouted Football have been big fans of Tzimas for some time: https://open.substack.com/pub/scout...?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android&r=38v641

Based on this it's a very exciting signing, though his profile based on speed in behind on the counter doesn't sound perfectly suited to the way we currently play.

(Highly recommend Scouted to anyone interested in youth prospects. They're big on Yalcouye too)

He shouldn't be allowed anywhere near the team until August; and only then if he's had the required injury and recovery time etc.

Will be loaned to a club in Belgium or Netherlands anyway. When has a 18 year old with hardly any experience gone into the first team!

Hi all !

New to the forum and came here for "Tzimas" reasons. I am greek but I live in Germany for the past 15 years.
I am trying not to be biased but I am not the guy who would hype someone just because he is greek, and I also never supported the team tha Tzimas played for in Greece.

But congratulations on a great signing ! Moving fast you secured him ahead of the competition, Fiorentina was really close, and on the last game he played on Friday, the Stadion was packed with scouters, including Mat.Sammer on behalf of Dortmund.

I follow both the first 2 Leagues in Germany and have actually seen all Tzimas games this year. The progress he is making is amazing. The biggest factor was:
1. Leaving from Greece, while PAOk has good youth facilities and has produced some great talent recently, greek teams have the tendency to keep their talents until they reach about 25 years of age and still considered "talents", while trusting 35 year old 2nd choice brasilian players for example :D
2. And most important, his coach at Nürnberg is Miroslav Klose, who apart from coaching him, he is also like a mentor for the striker position. The fact that he will finish the season there, in my opinion is more important that helping right now (even though he could contribute immediately in first team football).

You probably already started lookign for reports, youtube videos etc, this is a good scouting report :
Best video is probably this :

I will be really happy to watch his games next year and discuss in this forum !
Any questions (tzimas, greek recipes, vacation suggestions :D ) let me know .

Cheers,

Alex

PS: Someone asked

Has there ever been a good Greek striker ?

Based on numbers and success outside Greece :

1. Nikos Machlas. 1997/98 European Golden Shoe and Top Scorer in Holland 34 goals in 32 games. Later transfered to Ajax with a carreer of 44 goals and 16 assists in 93 games.
2. Theofanis Gekas. 2006/2007 Top Scorer in Bundesliga with Bochum
3. Nikolas Samaras (might be familiar to some as he signed in 2006 with Man.City, but he best carreer days were at Scotland and Celtic)
4. Most recent one. Vangelis Pavlidis, Top Scorer in Holland last year, transfered to Benfica for 18M, Scored a Hattrick against Barcelona in C.L a few days ago
