Right, I'm setting myself up for being a bit of a dummy here, but can someone explain this ongoing in-joke which, sadly, has passed me by?

It dates back to an incident at Cardiff I believe, Cardiff were winning and seconds away from promotion at Ninian Park against someone or other, when the message came on over the tannoy:

"Would the fans please stay off the pitch at the final whistle so Sam and the lads can do a lap of honour"

No sooner had this been uttered than BANG, in went the equaliser and poof went their promotion. Something like that anyway.

*snigger*

Achully,, its in NSC GOld

Please stay off the pitch at the final whistle... - North Stand Chat

Not a chance. The pitch will get flooded with jubilant fans, and who can blame them - in fact I may well be one of them.

Then, if you hang around long enough, I'd expect an announcement to clear the pitch to allow the players back out for the lap of honour you crave.

Thats exactly what i think will happen.

Cant wait! :D

If you are thinking of invading the pitch, watch out for the H Block steward who loves using his, er, restraint techniques. There's a thread from last home game last season with photos showing what you can expect, and who from. And probably just a coincidence that he was the very same steward left holding the severed leg in the infamous H Block dismemberment incident earlier this season. And who fits the description of the guy who 'restrained' a happy pitch-invader after the Man City game and bust his wrist.

Step lightly. And have a friend take photographs admissable as evidence in a court of law.

Ohhh i'm in H Block, i am UP for the challenge - it'll be like "Gauntlet" in gladiators...

That Cardiff game ("stay off the pitch so Sam and the lads can do a lap of honour") is even funnier than I remember it.
It was aganist Stoke in the L1 Playoff semi, 2nd leg (we'd already gone up as Champions to the Championship). Cardiff were 2-1 up from the first leg. That 2nd leg went as follows:

Cardiff 0

Stoke 2
O'Connor 90
Oulare 105

Stoke win 3-2 on aggregate

:lolol:

If memory serves, that was the same golden era of NSC that had the thread by some kind of visiting fan who stated quite clearly that 'The Big Day Is Here - And We Ain't Coming for A Poxy Point' - which they didn't

What - Sam? I thought at first it was a a film noir reference (Sam Slade), but it's actually Sam Spade, isn't it?

Stumped

Oh, dont be such a tart!

So your happy for potentially League 2 football so so long as you get to run on a bit of grass:tosser:

Perhaps i have higher aspirations, but running on to a pitch after a football game does not appeal as an exciting thing to do.

Well the team shouldn't be in the position they are in, and in my eyes, I don't see a reason as to why they should be doing a lap of honour for staying up. If we got promoted or finished in/just outside the play-offs, in what would be an achievement, then yes they should be applauded by the fans but not otherwise.

Completely agree. I shall of course go mentalist if we stay up, but it's hardly a reason to "celebrate" is it. I'm still f***ing annoyed we're even in this position.

The pitch must be invaded right on the final whistle on Saturday
Every team does this, so all that nonsense about deducted points is useless.
The invasion has got to be done
